Frequently asked questions about water bottles
How long does an insulated bottle keep water cold?
A quality double-wall vacuum insulated bottle keeps cold water cold for most of a day and, with ice, often well into the next, while hot drinks stay hot for several hours. Performance depends on the size, how full it is, how often you open it and the outside temperature. Filling the bottle right up and pre-chilling it with cold water first gives the best results.
Insulated or plastic water bottle for hiking?
A plastic bottle is lighter and cheaper, which matters when you are carrying water for hours and counting every gram in your pack. An insulated stainless bottle keeps water cold on hot days, or a drink warm in winter, but adds weight. Many trampers carry a light plastic bottle for most of their water and a small insulated bottle for a hot drink or cold water at lunch.
Why are Nalgene bottles so popular?
Nalgene bottles are known for being almost indestructible, with a wide mouth that is easy to fill, clean and add ice to, and handy volume markings on the side. They are made from BPA-free plastic, are light for their strength and seal reliably, so they have been a favourite of trampers, travellers and campers for decades. Many people use them as a hot water bottle in a sleeping bag too.
How does a Grayl purifier bottle work?
A Grayl purifier bottle works like a coffee press: you fill the outer cup with water, then press the inner cartridge down through it, forcing the water through a purifier that removes contaminants such as bacteria and protozoa, and is designed to handle viruses too. It takes only a few seconds, which makes it handy for travel, tramping and anywhere the water quality is uncertain. Replace the cartridge as the maker recommends.
Chug cap, straw lid or standard cap - which should I choose?
A chug cap gives a fast, controlled flow that is easy to drink from without spilling, which suits most everyday use. A straw lid lets you sip without tipping the bottle, which is handy at your desk, in the car or at the gym. A standard screw cap is the simplest and most leakproof for bags. Many bottles accept different lids, so you can swap them for different situations.
Can I put fizzy drinks in an insulated bottle?
It depends on the bottle and the lid, so check the maker's guidance. Carbonated drinks build up pressure, and some caps are not designed to hold it, which can cause leaks or a burst of fizz when opened. Some bottles and lids are specifically designed for carbonation. If you are unsure, use a bottle approved for fizzy drinks and open it slowly, especially after it has been shaken in a bag.
What size water bottle should I carry every day?
For desk, school and errands, a 500 to 750 ml bottle is easy to carry and refill. For long days out, sport or hot weather, around 1 litre means fewer refills. Larger bottles of 1.5 to 2 litres suit road trips and work sites, while very large jugs are better left in the car or at camp. Choose a size you will actually carry, as a bottle left at home helps no one.
Are water jugs worth it for camping and road trips?
A large insulated water jug or keg keeps a supply of cold water handy for the whole group, which means fewer trips to the tap and less single-use plastic. It is ideal for family road trips, beach days, work sites and campsites. Look for a sturdy carry handle, a wide opening for adding ice and a spout or tap for easy pouring, and choose a size that you can still lift when full.
