About Oakley

Oakley was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard in California. It started out making motorcycle grips from a material Jannard called Unobtainium, which gets grippier when wet, before moving into goggles and then sunglasses. That mix of engineering and bold design became Oakley's signature, and the brand is now part of EssilorLuxottica.

Oakley still uses Unobtainium on the earsocks and nosepads of many frames, so glasses stay put when you are hot and sweaty or wet with spray.

Prizm lens technology

Prizm is Oakley's lens technology, designed to fine-tune the colours your eyes see for a specific setting. Prizm Road lenses make road surface details stand out for cyclists, and Prizm Deep Water Polarized lenses cut glare off the water and boost the colours of blue water, which is why they are popular with anglers. Everyday Prizm Grey and Black lenses lift contrast for general use, on the beach, behind the wheel or around town.

Fit matters as much as the lens. The Holbrook also comes in XL and XXL sizes for wider faces, and sport frames such as the Radar EV Path use a tall lens that extends your view upwards when you are riding in a low position.

Oakley at Land & Sea

We carry Oakley lifestyle frames such as the Holbrook and Latch, sport frames such as the Radar EV Path, Sutro, Eyejacket Redux and Turbine, and polarised options for fishing and boating, along with Oakley caps. Many styles come in a range of frame colours and Prizm lenses, and our team can help you choose between polarised and non-polarised lenses for the way you use them.

Polarised lenses are worth it for driving and time on the water, where reflected glare is strongest, while non-polarised Prizm lenses suit sports where you need to read screens or judge icy surfaces. We can show you the difference side by side.

Frequently asked questions about Oakley

Are Oakley sunglasses worth it?

For most people who wear sunglasses every day or for sport, yes. Oakley frames are light, tough and comfortable, Unobtainium nosepads and earsocks keep them in place when you are sweaty, and Prizm lenses improve contrast and colour so you see more detail. They cost more than budget sunglasses, but the optics, fit and durability are a clear step up, and a good pair looked after properly lasts for years.

What is Oakley Prizm?

Prizm is Oakley's lens technology. Each Prizm lens is tuned to filter specific wavelengths of light so that colours and contrast are enhanced for a particular activity or environment. That might mean seeing road surface detail more clearly on a bike, picking out the ball on a sports field, or seeing through glare into the water when fishing. Prizm comes in polarised and non-polarised versions, and in many lens tints.

Which Oakley sunglasses are best for fishing?

Look for polarised lenses, which cut the glare reflecting off the water so you can see fish, structure and colour changes below the surface. Oakley's Prizm Deep Water Polarized lenses are tuned for offshore and blue water fishing, while other Prizm polarised lenses suit inshore fishing and general boating. Choose a frame with good coverage, such as the Holbrook or Radar EV Path, to block light coming in from the sides.

What is the difference between the Oakley Holbrook, Holbrook XL and Holbrook XXL?

They are the same classic Holbrook style in different sizes. The standard Holbrook suits small to medium faces, the Holbrook XL has a slightly larger lens and frame for medium to large faces, and the Holbrook XXL is the biggest version for wide faces and anyone who wants maximum coverage. Choose by how the frame sits across your temples and cheeks, and try them on in store if you can.

Is the Oakley Radar EV Path good for cycling and running?

Yes, the Radar EV Path is one of Oakley's most popular sport frames for cycling and running. Its tall lens extends your view upwards, which helps when you are riding in a low position on the bike, the frame is light, and Unobtainium nosepads and earsocks keep it stable when you sweat. It is available with Prizm lenses such as Road Jade for cycling, and with polarised lenses for water sports.

Who owns Oakley?

Oakley is owned by EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear group that also owns brands such as Ray-Ban. Oakley was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard in California and became part of the Luxottica group in 2007. It continues to design its own frames and lens technology, including Prizm, and remains one of the best known names in sport and performance eyewear around the world.
