Men's Footwear

Men's footwear for every kind of New Zealand day, from trail and road running shoes to hiking boots, everyday sneakers, sandals and technical socks. Our range brings together the brands that get fit and performance right, On, Hoka, Salomon, Lusso Cloud, Crocs and Teva, with shoes for the track, the trail and the weekend.

The right shoe starts with what you are doing in it. For clocking up kilometres, running shoes are tuned for road or trail with the cushioning and grip to match; for multi-day tramps and rough ground, hiking boots and shoes add support, protection and traction; and for warm days and the campsite, sandals and slides keep it easy. Round it out with casual shoes for everyday and the right socks to keep your feet comfortable, because good socks make even the best shoes better.

Fit is everything with footwear, so come and try shoes on at our Grey Lynn concept store where the team can help you get the size and shape right, or order online for fast, tracked delivery across New Zealand with easy returns if the fit is not spot on.

Frequently asked questions about men's footwear

How do I choose the right shoe for what I do?

Start with the activity, not the look. Running shoes are tuned for repetitive forward motion on road or trail, hiking footwear adds support and protection for rough ground and loads, sandals suit warm days and easy wear, and casual shoes are built for all-day everyday comfort. Buying a shoe designed for how you will actually use it makes a bigger difference to comfort and durability than any single feature, so pick the category first and the specific model second.

How should I measure my shoe size at home?

Measure both feet in the afternoon, when they are at their largest, standing up on a piece of paper with your weight on them. Mark the longest point and measure heel to toe, then compare against the brand's size chart rather than assuming a number. Feet are often slightly different sizes, so fit to the larger one. Allow about a thumbnail of space in front of your longest toe for everyday and hiking, and a touch more for running.

Do different shoe brands fit the same?

No, and this trips a lot of people up. Sizing and shape vary between brands and even between models, so your size in one is only a starting point in another. Some brands run narrow, some wide, some short or long for the stated size. Always check each product's size guide, and if you are ordering online in an unfamiliar brand, our team can tell you how it tends to fit or you can rely on our easy returns to swap sizes.

Should performance shoes fit differently from everyday shoes?

Yes. Running and hiking shoes usually want a little more room in front of the toes, because your feet swell and slide forward on descents and long efforts, so many people size up a half. Everyday and casual shoes can sit closer to your true size for a neat fit. The heel and midfoot should feel locked in on any shoe, with the extra room only at the toes, never loose around the back.

How often should I replace my shoes?

It depends on use. Running shoes typically last around 500 to 800 kilometres before the cushioning and support break down, even if the upper still looks fine. Hiking footwear is judged more by the tread and the midsole, so watch for worn lugs and loss of support. Everyday shoes last until the comfort or the look goes. A good sign it is time is new aches or hot spots that were not there before.

Are your shoes suitable for wide or narrow feet?

Many are. Some brands are known for roomier or narrower fits, and a number of models come in width options. If your feet are on the wider or narrower side, that shape matters more than the length, so it is worth asking rather than guessing. Tell our team what has fitted you well before and they can point you to the brands and models most likely to suit.

Do I need different shoes for running, hiking and everyday wear?

Ideally yes, because each is built for a different job and using the right one is more comfortable and lasts longer. That said, there is useful crossover: a door-to-trail running shoe handles roads and light trails, and outdoor-brand casual shoes are comfortable enough for plenty of walking. If you are building a collection, most people start with one good pair for their main activity and add from there.

How should I care for and clean my shoes?

Knock off the mud after use, remove the insoles and loosen the laces to let them air and dry naturally, away from direct heat which can warp soles and glue. Clean with a soft brush and mild soap rather than throwing them in the washing machine, which breaks shoes down faster. Drying them slowly and storing them somewhere airy does more for their lifespan than anything else.
