Norda is a trail running brand from Montreal, Canada, founded by Nick Martire and Willa Wang with a simple goal: make a trail shoe that lasts far longer than the usual few hundred kilometres. Instead of chasing new colours every season, Norda put its effort into materials and construction, and the result is one of the most durable trail running shoes on the market.

The Norda 001A
The heart of the shoe is its seamless upper, made from Dyneema, a fibre known for its strength to weight ratio. Because there are no stitched overlays to fray or tear, the upper resists abrasion from rocks and scree and holds its shape run after run. Underneath, a Vibram sole gives confident grip on wet rock, roots and loose ground, and a cushioned midsole keeps long days comfortable.

It is not a waterproof boot, so for wet multi-day trips in deep mud or snow, or with a heavy pack, a tramping boot with more ankle support will be more comfortable.
How should Norda shoes fit?
Like most trail running shoes, a Norda should feel secure through the heel and midfoot with a little room at the toes, roughly a thumb's width, so your toes do not hit the front on long descents. Because the upper is made from a strong, low stretch material, it is worth trying the shoe on with the socks you run or hike in. Is the Norda 001A waterproof?
No, the Norda 001A is not a waterproof shoe. Its Dyneema upper is tough and shrugs off splashes, but it does not use a waterproof membrane, so water will get in through deep puddles and stream crossings. The upside is that it breathes better and dries faster than a waterproof shoe, which many trail runners prefer. Pair it with merino socks to keep feet warmer and more comfortable when they get wet.
Are expensive trail running shoes worth it?
It depends on how long they last. A premium shoe such as the Norda 001A costs more up front, but its durable Dyneema upper and Vibram sole are built to keep performing for far longer than a typical trail shoe, so the cost per kilometre can work out lower.
