Frequently asked questions about cups and tumblers

What is the difference between a tumbler and a mug?

A mug has a handle and a wider, shorter shape that suits coffee and tea at home, at work or around the campsite. A tumbler has no handle and a tapered body that fits car cup holders, making it the better choice for commuting and road trips. Both are double-wall insulated. Choose a mug if you mostly drink sitting down, and a tumbler if your coffee travels with you.

How long will an insulated tumbler keep my coffee hot?

An insulated stainless tumbler keeps coffee hot for much longer than a ceramic cup, often for an hour or more with the lid on, and iced drinks stay cold for many hours. How long depends on the size, how full it is and how often you open the lid. Pre-warming the tumbler with hot water for a minute before pouring in your coffee noticeably improves the result.

What is a MagSlider lid?

A MagSlider is YETI's tumbler and mug lid with a magnetic slider that moves across the drinking opening. You slide it open to sip and closed to keep heat in and reduce splashes. The magnetic slider pops off for easy cleaning and clicks back into place. Like most tumbler lids, it is designed to be spill-resistant rather than fully leakproof, so keep it upright rather than in a bag.

Are tumbler lids leakproof?

Most tumbler and mug lids are spill-resistant, meaning they reduce splashes when you walk or drive, but they are not designed to be tipped over or carried on their side in a bag. If you need a fully leakproof option, choose a bottle with a sealing screw cap or a travel mug with a locking lid. Check the product description, as it will say whether a lid is leakproof or splash-resistant.

What is a straw mug good for?

A large insulated straw mug is ideal for sipping water through the day at your desk, in the car or at the gym, because you can drink without unscrewing a lid or tipping it up. The insulation keeps ice from melting for hours, and the handle makes it easy to carry. Straw lids are not leakproof, so they are best for upright use rather than tossing in a bag.

Are stackable camp mugs worth it?

For campers, families and anyone short on space, yes. Stackable insulated mugs nest inside each other, so a set takes up little room in a camp kitchen box, picnic basket or boat locker. The insulation keeps coffee and hot chocolate warm in the cold morning air at camp, and the stainless steel construction survives being knocked around far better than ceramic or enamel.

What size mug or tumbler is right for coffee?

A 6 to 10 oz mug holds a standard flat white or long black, while a 14 oz mug or a 20 oz tumbler suits a large coffee or a big refill to sip on the commute. Larger 30 oz tumblers and 35 oz straw mugs are better for water and iced drinks. If you take your reusable cup to a cafe, check that it fits under their machine and holds your usual order size.
