Men's Vests

Men's vests for running, hiking and layering, from hydration and running vests that carry water and essentials to lightweight insulated and casual vests for core warmth. Our range features Salomon, On, Columbia, CamelBak and more, built to add function without the sleeves.

There are two kinds of vest here, so choose by purpose. A running or hydration vest sits snug to your body to carry water, gels and a phone hands-free for training and trail runs, with the fit being the critical thing. A layering vest, insulated or fleece, adds core warmth while keeping your arms free, and works well over a tee or under a jacket. Decide whether you need to carry gear or add warmth, and fit it accordingly.

Fit is critical on a running vest, so come and try one loaded up at our Grey Lynn concept store, or order online for fast, tracked delivery across New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions about men's vests

What is the difference between a running vest and a hydration vest?

The terms overlap. A running vest is a snug pack you wear on your front and back to carry essentials on the run, and most running vests are hydration vests, meaning they are built to carry water in soft flasks or a bladder. Some minimalist running vests carry only gear and no water. In practice, look at how much water and kit a given vest holds rather than the name.

How should a running or hydration vest fit?

Snug and stable, like a second skin, so it does not bounce or chafe when you run. It should be tight enough that a full vest stays put but not so tight it restricts your breathing, and most have adjustable straps to dial it in. Because fit is so individual, trying one on, ideally loaded with water, is the best way to get it right.

How much can a hydration vest carry?

It varies by size. Smaller race vests carry a couple of soft flasks and the essentials for a short run, while larger trail and fastpacking vests hold one to two litres of water plus layers, food and safety gear for long days. Think about your longest outings and how much water and kit they need, then choose a capacity that covers them without being oversized for everyday runs.

What is a layering vest for?

A layering vest adds warmth to your core, your chest and back, while leaving your arms completely free, which is ideal when a full jacket would be too warm or restrictive. Insulated and fleece vests are great over a tee or under a shell for active days, commuting and cool mornings. They are a versatile piece for shoulder-season warmth without bulk.

When would I wear a vest instead of a jacket?

Reach for a layering vest when your core needs warmth but your arms do not, such as high-output activity, mild days, or when you want to layer without bulk under a shell. A jacket is better when it is genuinely cold or wet and you need full coverage. Many people use a vest as their flexible in-between layer for that big range of not-quite-jacket weather.

Can I use a running vest for hiking and fastpacking?

Yes, larger running vests are popular for fast, light hiking and fastpacking because they carry water and gear comfortably against your body and move well. For heavy multi-day loads a proper backpack is better, but for fast day missions and light overnights a roomy running vest is a great, comfortable option. Match the vest's capacity to how much you need to carry.

How do I clean a hydration or running vest?

Hand wash it in cool water with mild soap, paying attention to the sweaty shoulder and back areas, then rinse well and air dry away from direct heat. Rinse the bladder or soft flasks after every use and dry them fully to prevent mould. Avoid the washing machine and dryer, which can damage the structure, buckles and fit of the vest.
