Frequently asked questions about fly rods

What weight fly rod is best for New Zealand trout?

A 9 foot 5 or 6 weight is the classic all-round trout rod for New Zealand, handling dry flies, nymphs and small streamers on most rivers and lakes, and coping with wind. A 4 weight suits small streams and delicate presentations, while a 7 weight helps with big lake fish, heavy nymph rigs and strong winds. Match the line weight to the rod for the best casting.

What length fly rod should I choose?

Nine feet is the standard length for trout and saltwater fly rods, giving good line control, mending and casting distance. Shorter rods, around 7 to 8 feet, suit small, overgrown streams where space is tight. Longer rods, around 10 feet, are used for Euro nymphing and some lake fishing, where reach and line control matter more than casting distance.

Fast or medium action fly rod - which should I choose?

Fast action rods are stiffer, generate high line speed and handle wind and long casts well, but they are less forgiving of timing errors. Medium and moderate action rods bend more, giving a smoother, more forgiving feel and delicate presentations, which suits dry fly fishing and beginners. Many anglers find a medium-fast rod a good all-round compromise.

What fly rod do I need for saltwater fly fishing?

Saltwater fly fishing needs heavier rods, typically 8 to 12 weight, to cast larger flies in the wind and fight powerful fish like kingfish. A 9 weight is a versatile starting point for kahawai and smaller kingfish, while 10 to 12 weights suit big kingfish. Saltwater rods have corrosion-resistant components and fighting butts, and should be rinsed after every use.

What is a Euro nymphing rod?

Euro nymphing rods are long and light, often 10 feet in a 2 to 4 weight, designed for tight-line nymphing with weighted flies and a thin leader rather than casting a conventional fly line. The long rod gives reach and control, and the soft tip detects subtle takes. Euro nymphing is very effective in fast New Zealand rivers and has become popular with anglers.

Why are most fly rods 4-piece?

Four-piece fly rods break down to around 75 centimetres, short enough to fit in a car, a backpack or airline luggage, which suits New Zealand's travel and backcountry fishing. Modern ferrules are strong and light, so a 4-piece rod casts almost identically to a 2-piece. Always seat the sections firmly and check the ferrules are aligned before casting.
