Wading Boots

Wading boots with grippy rubber soles, ankle support and quick-draining construction for crossing New Zealand's rivers safely. Our range features Simms and Patagonia, plus studs and boot accessories.

A good wading boot supports your ankles on slippery boulders and drains quickly after crossings. Pair them with stockingfoot waders or neoprene socks for wet wading, and carry a wading staff from our tools and accessories for extra stability.

Try boots on with your waders at our Grey Lynn concept store, or order online for tracked delivery across New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions about wading boots

How should wading boots fit?

Wading boots are worn over neoprene wader feet or socks, so most people go up one size from their normal shoe size, but check the brand's sizing guide. They should feel snug and supportive, with your heel held firmly and room to wiggle your toes. Try them on with your waders or wading socks, as a loose boot rubs and gives poor control on slippery rocks.

Rubber soles or studded soles - which grip better?

Sticky rubber soles grip well on dry rocks and are comfortable for walking, and they are legal in New Zealand, where felt soles are banned. Adding metal studs or cleats greatly improves grip on slimy, algae-covered boulders in rivers. Studs can be noisy and slippery on hard surfaces like boat decks, so many anglers fit removable studs and use them only on the river.

Can I wet wade in wading boots?

Yes, in summer many New Zealand anglers wet wade, wearing quick-drying pants or shorts with neoprene wading socks and their wading boots, which keeps them cool on long walks. The neoprene socks protect your feet from grit and add warmth in cold water. Wading boots drain quickly and support your ankles, which makes them much safer than sneakers on slippery river beds.

How do I dry and clean wading boots?

Rinse boots with fresh water after use to remove grit, mud and plant material, then remove the insoles and let them dry fully away from direct heat. Follow Check, Clean, Dry between waterways, scrubbing and cleaning the soles and laces. Dry boots stop odours and prevent the spread of didymo. Store them in a ventilated place rather than a sealed bag.

What lacing system is best on wading boots?

Traditional laces are simple, easy to adjust and replaceable in the field. Some boots use quick-lace or dial-based systems that tighten evenly with a turn and are easy to adjust with cold or wet hands. Whatever the system, make sure the boot holds your foot firmly, as a secure fit gives you more control and confidence when wading across strong currents.

How long do wading boots last?

With regular use, quality wading boots usually last several seasons, depending on how far you walk and how rough the terrain is. Rinse and dry them after each trip, check stitching and soles regularly, and replace worn studs. Some boots can be resoled, which extends their life. Replace boots when the soles are worn smooth or the uppers no longer support your ankles.
