Frequently asked questions about fly fishing packs and storage

Sling pack, chest pack or hip pack - which suits me?

A sling pack swings from your back to your front for quick access and carries a fair amount of gear, which suits most river fishing. A chest pack keeps a smaller kit right in front of you, ideal for short sessions and deep wading. A hip pack carries more weight comfortably around your waist but can get wet in deep water. Choose by how much gear you carry and how deep you wade.

Do I need a waterproof fishing pack?

If you wade deep, cross rivers or fish in the rain, a waterproof pack protects your phone, keys, spare layers and lunch, which matters on remote backcountry trips. Fully waterproof packs use welded seams and waterproof zips. A water-resistant pack is fine for casual fishing, with a dry bag inside for anything that must stay dry. Waterproof packs also make Check, Clean, Dry easier.

How should I organise my fly boxes?

Many anglers keep separate boxes for dry flies, nymphs and streamers, organised by size and pattern, so they can find the right fly quickly on the river. A slim box for your most-used flies saves opening several boxes. Waterproof boxes keep flies dry, and boxes with foam or silicone slots hold flies securely. Clearing out rusty or damaged flies regularly keeps your boxes useful.

How do I protect my fly rod when travelling?

Keep your rod in its cloth sleeve inside a hard rod tube whenever you are travelling, whether in a car, on a plane or strapped to a pack for a backcountry walk. A full-length rod sleeve lets you carry a rigged rod between pools or in a vehicle without damaging the guides. Never leave rods loose in the boot or under other gear. Label the tube with your name and phone number.

How do I store spare leaders and tippet?

Leader wallets keep spare tapered leaders organised and tangle-free, and tippet holders or spool bars keep several tippet sizes handy on your pack or vest. Store spare tippet out of direct sunlight, which weakens it over time. Replace old tippet each season, and label leaders by length and strength so you can quickly grab the one you need. Check spools before each trip.

How do I carry a landing net while fishing?

A magnetic net release clips your landing net to the back of your pack or vest, letting you pull it free with one hand when you hook a fish, and then reattach it. Many packs have a net slot or holster built in. Keeping the net on your back means it is always close by but out of the way when you are walking and casting. Choose a net length that suits the size of the fish you expect.
