Sleeping Bags

A good sleeping bag is the heart of a comfortable camp. Our range runs from roomy car-camping bags to ultralight down bags for the backcountry, from trusted names like Sea to Summit, Wildtrak and Nemo, with warmth ratings to match every New Zealand season.

Choose your bag by the temperatures you will face, the shape you find comfortable, and how much you have to carry. A tapered mummy bag traps warmth and packs small for hikers; a rectangular bag gives more room for car camping. Whichever you pick, pair it with a good camp mat so the cold ground cannot steal your warmth overnight.

Not sure which bag suits your trips? call into the Land & Sea concept store at 36 Pollen Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland for a hands on look, or shop online with fast, tracked delivery right across New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions about sleeping bags

What is the difference between a mummy and a rectangular sleeping bag?

A mummy bag is tapered to follow your body, so there is less air to heat and it stays warmer while packing smaller and lighter, ideal for hiking. A rectangular bag has more room to move and often unzips fully into a quilt, which suits warmer weather and car camping where weight is not a concern.

What do the comfort and limit temperature ratings mean?

The comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which a cold sleeper should stay comfortable, and the limit rating is the lowest at which a warm sleeper should sleep reasonably. Most people should buy on the comfort rating and allow a little margin, since factors like your mat, tiredness and what you eat all affect how warm you feel.

Do I need a sleeping bag liner?

A liner is a cheap, light addition that adds a few degrees of warmth, keeps the inside of your bag clean so it needs washing less often, and can be used on its own on warm nights. Silk and thermal liners are popular for exactly these reasons.

Can two sleeping bags be zipped together?

Many rectangular bags are designed to join into a double when you have one left-hand and one right-hand zip of the same type and length. Check the zip side and length before buying a pair. Mummy bags generally do not zip together.

How should I wash and store a sleeping bag?

Wash sparingly, using a gentle cycle and a wash designed for down or synthetic fill, then dry it fully so no damp remains. Between trips, store it loosely in a large cotton or mesh sack rather than crammed in its stuff sack, because keeping the fill lofted is what keeps it warm over the years.

What should I look for in a kids' sleeping bag?

Pick a bag sized for the child rather than an adult bag, because too much empty space is harder to keep warm. Look for an easy, snag-free zip, a warmth rating suited to your conditions, and tough fabric that copes with plenty of use.
