Airbeds
For car camping comfort that feels close to home, it is hard to beat an airbed. Our inflatable camp beds come in single and double sizes, some with built-in pillows or pumps, from brands like Zempire, Coleman and OzTrail, so the whole family can sleep well at the campsite.
Think about height and warmth as well as size: a taller double-height bed is easier to get in and out of, while any airbed benefits from a camp mat or blanket underneath in cooler weather, since the air inside sleeps cold. Keep a pump handy so topping up is quick.
Not sure which airbed fits your tent? call into the Land & Sea concept store at 36 Pollen Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland for a hands on look, or shop online with fast, tracked delivery right across New Zealand.
Frequently asked questions about airbeds
Why does my airbed feel flat in the morning?
Usually it is not a leak. Air contracts as it cools overnight, so a bed inflated firm in the warm evening feels soft by dawn. Inflate it a little firmer before bed, give it a quick top-up if needed, and only start hunting for a leak if it goes properly flat.
What is the difference between a single-height and double-height airbed?
A single-height bed sits low and packs smaller, which suits smaller tents and lighter loads. A double-height bed sits higher off the ground, so it is much easier to climb in and out of, warmer away from the cold floor, and feels more like a real bed, at the cost of size and weight.
How do I inflate an airbed at camp without power?
Use a battery, rechargeable or foot pump, or a 12V pump that runs off your vehicle. Many camp pumps both inflate and deflate. It is worth carrying a pump that does not rely on mains power so you are never stuck, and a spare set of batteries if yours is battery-powered.
Do I need insulation under an airbed in cold weather?
Yes. The large volume of air inside an airbed circulates and pulls heat away, so you can feel cold even in a good sleeping bag. Add a sleeping mat, a blanket or a topper between you and the airbed in cooler conditions to keep that warmth in.
What size airbed will fit my tent?
Check your tent's floor dimensions against the airbed size, and leave room to move around it and store gear. A double airbed needs a tent rated for more people than just two, since the bed itself takes up most of a nominal two-person floor. When in doubt, measure the tent floor first.
How do I find and fix a leak in an airbed?
Inflate it fully, then run a damp soapy cloth over the seams and surface and watch for bubbles, or listen closely in a quiet space. Mark the spot, clean and dry it, and apply the patch from the repair kit. Valves and seams are the usual culprits.
