About Sea to Summit
Sea to Summit was founded in 1990 in Perth, Western Australia, by Roland Tyson. Its name comes from mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape's expedition that year, when he travelled from the sea at the Bay of Bengal to the summit of Everest without supplementary oxygen. The brand grew from that spirit of adventure into one of the best known names in lightweight outdoor equipment.
Sea to Summit is known for clever, light designs that solve real problems on the trail, from waterproof storage to cookware that collapses flat, and for keeping that gear light without making it fragile.
Sleep systems
Sea to Summit's down sleeping bags cover a wide range of trips. The Spark is ultralight for fast and light tramping, the Ascent is a versatile bag with more room and comfort features, and the Trek is a durable, good-value choice for regular trips. Temperature ratings run from summer bags to cold-weather models, so you can choose by season.
Ether Light XR mats use Air Sprung Cells, a pattern of individual air cells that support you like a pocket-sprung mattress, with insulation to keep you off the cold ground. Aeros pillows add comfort for very little weight.
Comfort Blend liners add warmth and keep a bag clean on longer trips. A good mat matters as much as the bag, because more heat is lost into the cold ground than into the air around you.
Dry bags, travel and the camp kitchen
Sea to Summit dry bags are a staple for kayaking, boating and tramping. Lightweight Dry Bags keep gear organised and dry inside a pack, while Big River dry bags and backpacks use tougher fabric for wet, rough use. Drylite towels dry fast and pack small, and the Frontier collapsible bowls and Camp Kitchen kits make cooking and cleaning up simple. We carry a wide range, so ask our team for help choosing a bag or mat for your trip.
Frequently asked questions about Sea to Summit
Is Sea to Summit a good brand?
Yes. Sea to Summit is a respected Australian outdoor brand known for lightweight, well-designed gear such as down sleeping bags, insulated air mats, dry bags and collapsible camp kitchen gear. Its products are widely used by trampers, travellers and paddlers in New Zealand, and many of its designs solve everyday problems on the trail while keeping weight and pack size to a minimum.
Which Sea to Summit sleeping bag should I buy?
Start with the temperature rating for the coldest conditions you expect, then choose the series. The Spark is ultralight and packs very small, ideal for fast tramping and summer alpine trips. The Ascent is roomier and more versatile, with features for comfort over many nights. The Trek is a durable, good-value down bag for regular camping and tramping. Choose men's or women's fits and regular or long lengths to suit you.
What is the Sea to Summit Ether Light XR?
The Ether Light XR is a lightweight insulated air sleeping mat. It uses Air Sprung Cells, which act like a pocket-sprung mattress to spread your weight evenly, and built-in insulation to reduce heat loss to the ground. The XR Pro version adds more insulation for colder conditions. Both pack small for tramping and come in different sizes, so choose the length and width that suit how you sleep.
What is the difference between Sea to Summit Lightweight and Big River dry bags?
Lightweight Dry Bags use thin, light fabric and are designed to go inside a pack or bag, keeping clothes, sleeping bags and electronics organised and dry. Big River dry bags use heavier, more abrasion-resistant fabric so they can be used on the outside of a pack, in a kayak or on a boat where they will get dragged and splashed. Both use roll-top closures, which should be rolled several times to seal properly.
Are Sea to Summit sleeping mats warm enough for winter?
Choose by the R-value, the measure of how well a mat insulates you from the cold ground. A higher R-value means more warmth. For summer trips a lower rating is fine, but for winter tramping and snow camping you need a well insulated mat such as the Ether Light XR Pro, or a combination of mats. Pair it with a sleeping bag rated for the conditions, because a bag cannot keep you warm on its own if heat is lost to the ground.
Where does the Sea to Summit name come from?
The name comes from the 1990 expedition by Australian mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape, who travelled on foot from the sea at the Bay of Bengal to the summit of Everest, climbing without supplementary oxygen. Sea to Summit was founded the same year in Perth, Western Australia, and the name reflects the brand's goal of making gear for adventures from sea level all the way to the mountains.
How do I look after a Sea to Summit down sleeping bag?
Store your down bag loosely in its large storage sack or hung up at home, not compressed in its stuff sack, so the down keeps its loft. Air it out after each trip and use a sleeping bag liner to keep it clean for longer. When it does need washing, use a down-specific wash and a front-loading machine on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry on low with dryer balls until it is completely dry.
