Frequently asked questions about travel accessories

Are packing cubes worth using?

For most travellers, yes. Packing cubes divide your bag into sections, such as tops, bottoms and underwear, so you can find things without unpacking everything. Compression cubes also squeeze clothing smaller, freeing up space. They make living out of a bag much easier, especially when you move between places often, and keep a backpack or duffel neat. Different colours or sizes help you remember what is where.

What is the difference between a microfibre and a regular towel for travel?

A microfibre travel towel is much lighter and more compact than a cotton towel, absorbs plenty of water and dries far faster, so it will not sit damp in your bag. That makes it ideal for tramping, hostels, camping and beach trips. A cotton towel feels plusher but is bulky and slow to dry. Many travel towels come with a loop for hanging and a mesh pouch to let them air out.

Do waterproof phone pouches really work?

A good waterproof phone pouch keeps your phone dry from spray, rain and splashes, and many are rated for brief immersion. Floating pouches also stop a dropped phone from sinking, which is a lifesaver on boats and wharves. Most let you use the touchscreen through the clear window. Check the seal is closed properly every time, and avoid relying on any pouch for long underwater use unless it is rated for it.

What should a basic travel repair kit include?

A small repair kit with adhesive fabric patches, a few metres of strong tape, safety pins, a needle and thread, cable ties and spare cord can fix most travel mishaps, from a torn jacket to a broken zip pull or a holed dry bag. Gear-specific patches for inflatable mats and waterproof fabrics are worth adding for tramping. It all fits in a tiny pouch and can save a trip.

How do I stop my bag smelling after a long trip?

Keep dirty and damp clothing separate, using a laundry bag or a spare dry bag, so it does not spread moisture and smells through clean clothes. Air out towels and wet gear whenever you can. At home, empty the bag completely, wash or wipe the inside, and let it dry fully open before storing. A quick-dry towel also helps, as it will not sit damp and musty in your bag.

Which travel accessories are most useful for a first big trip?

A set of packing cubes, a quick-dry travel towel, a small toiletry bag, a waterproof pouch or dry bag for electronics and documents, and a compact repair kit cover most needs. A luggage lock and a reusable water bottle are also worth having. These small extras weigh very little but make it far easier to stay organised and comfortable when you are moving between places.
