Frequently asked questions about rod and reel protection

Are reel covers worth using?

Yes, especially for good reels. A neoprene reel cover or padded protection case stops scratches and dings when reels are knocked around in the boat, car or rod rack, and helps keep sand, grit and salt spray out of the reel. They are inexpensive compared with the cost of repairing a damaged reel. Covers sized by reel size, such as 1000 to 5000, give the best fit.

Do I need a rod case for travelling?

A hard rod case or tube is the best way to protect rods when flying, driving long distances or storing them in a garage, where tips and guides are easily broken. Telescopic rod tubes adjust to different rod lengths. For short trips, rod sleeves and straps protect guides and stop rods tangling. A broken rod tip on the first day can ruin a fishing holiday.

How do I grease and oil my reel?

Use reel oil on moving parts such as the handle knob, line roller and bail arm pivots, and reel grease on gears and bearings where the maker recommends. A drop or two is enough; too much attracts grit. Wipe away excess and avoid oiling the drag washers unless the maker says to. For a full internal service, take the reel to a professional or follow the maker's guide carefully.

What are rod straps and bands for?

Rod straps and bands hold two rod sections together or keep multiple rods bundled neatly, stopping them rattling, tangling and rubbing against each other in transport. Some also secure the line and lure so they do not swing around. They are a cheap, simple way to protect rods and keep them tidy in the car, boat or rod rack. Choose straps that will not leave sticky residue or scratches on rod blanks.

How should I store my reels over winter?

Before storing reels for a long break, rinse them, dry them thoroughly and back the drag off completely so the washers do not compress. Add a little oil to moving parts and store them in covers or cases somewhere cool and dry. Consider having reels serviced before storage or before the new season. Check the line too, and replace mono that has been on the reel all season.

How do I protect rods in my car or boat?

Use rod holders or racks that keep rods upright or secured horizontally, rather than lying loose on the deck or across seats where they get stepped on or slammed in doors. Rod sleeves protect guides and blanks, and rod straps stop rods rubbing together. On the water, keep spare rods in holders away from where people walk and fish are landed. Secure rods before you drive.
