Camping Shelters
A camping shelter gives your site a shaded, sheltered heart, a place to cook, eat and gather out of the sun, wind and rain. Our shelters range from compact kitchen setups to large family living spaces, from the brands Kiwi campers trust like Kiwi Camping, Coleman and OzTrail.
Choose your shelter by the space you need underneath and how much weather you will face, then tailor it with sunwalls and covers for shade and wind protection. If quick, pole-free setup matters to you, take a look at our air shelters as well.
Not sure what suits your setup? call into the Land & Sea concept store at 36 Pollen Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland for a hands on look, or shop online with fast, tracked delivery right across New Zealand.
Frequently asked questions about camping shelters
Are camping shelters made of canvas or polyester?
Both are common. Polyester shelters are lighter, dry faster and cost less, which suits most campers. Canvas is heavier and pricier but breathes better, handles heat well and is very hard-wearing, so it appeals to long-stay and off-grid campers. Match the material to how often and how long you camp.
How do I set up a camping shelter on my own?
It is easier than it looks with a method: lay the shelter out flat, raise the centre or the legs part-way to give yourself headroom, then work around lifting each corner in turn before extending to full height and pegging out. Air shelters and pop-up designs make solo setup quicker still.
Can I add walls to my shelter?
Yes. Most shelters accept add-on walls, sunwalls and covers that clip or zip on to block sun, wind and rain from the direction you need. It is the easiest way to turn an open shade shelter into a more enclosed, weatherproof space as conditions change.
How do I pack up a wet shelter?
If you have to pack it wet, get it dry as soon as you are home: set it back up or hang it out until completely dry before storing, because packing away damp is what causes mould and smell. A quick shake to remove loose water and debris before rolling helps.
How do I store a shelter so it does not go mouldy?
Always store it bone dry, loosely packed, in a cool, dry place. If it was packed damp, air it fully at the first chance. Mould stains and weakens fabric and is hard to remove, so drying before storage is the single most important thing you can do to make a shelter last.
What is the difference between a shelter and a marquee?
In camping terms they overlap: a shelter usually refers to a smaller, more portable structure for a campsite kitchen or living area, often with optional walls, while a marquee tends to be a larger event structure. For most campers a shelter or gazebo is the practical choice.
