What are dredges and teasers used for?
Dredges and teasers are hookless attractors run behind or below the boat to raise marlin and tuna into your spread. A dredge is a cluster of artificial baitfish or squid pulled below the surface, imitating a bait school, while teasers and birds splash on the surface. Once a fish is attracted, it often switches to one of the rigged lures nearby.
How do I crimp a mono leader?
Slide a crimp sleeve onto the leader, pass the leader through the hook eye or swivel and back through the crimp, leaving a small loop, often protected with a thimble or chafe tubing. Use a proper crimping tool with the right die size to compress the sleeve firmly, then test the connection with a hard pull. Use crimps sized to your leader, and never mix brands of sleeve and tool sizes without checking.
What are thimbles and chafe tubing for?
Thimbles and chafe tubing protect the loop of a crimped leader where it passes through a hook or swivel, stopping the heavy mono from wearing or cutting under the strain of a big fish. They keep the loop round and spread the load. They are essential for heavy game fishing leaders, where long fights put enormous pressure on every connection. Replace worn tubing.
What is a wind-on leader?
A wind-on leader is a long leader joined to the main line with a slim connection that can be wound through the rod guides and onto the reel. That lets the angler wind the fish right up to the boat for the crew to take the leader, rather than stopping at a swivel. Wind-on leaders are popular in game fishing, making the end of the fight safer and easier.
What swivels and snaps should I use for game fishing?
Use heavy-duty ball-bearing swivels and game snaps rated well above your line class, as they must survive long, hard fights and the twisting of big fish. Quality brands designed for game fishing are a must. Check all hardware regularly for wear, corrosion and distortion, and replace anything doubtful, because a failed swivel can cost you the fish of a lifetime.
Do I need a rigging kit for game lures?
A rigging kit with crimps, thimbles, chafe tubing, hooks, swivels and a crimping tool lets you rig and repair game lures yourself, which is invaluable when lures are damaged or need re-rigging at sea. Pre-rigged lures are convenient, but knowing how to rig your own gives you control over hook placement and leader strength. Practise at home before the season starts.
