Coolers & Fridges

Portable Fridges

Portable fridges and fridge freezers that run off your vehicle, a battery or mains power, keeping food fresh on long road trips, camping holidays and overlanding adventures without the hassle of ice. Our range features Dometic, with 12, 24 and 240 volt compressor fridge freezers in a range of sizes.

A compressor fridge holds a set temperature even in hot weather, can freeze as well as chill, and some models run separate fridge and freezer zones. Mount it securely with fridge slides or tie-downs, and keep drinks in a soft cooler so the fridge stays shut. Protect it on the road with covers and accessories.

Frequently asked questions about portable fridges

How does a portable compressor fridge work?

A portable compressor fridge works like a small version of your home fridge, using a compressor to pump refrigerant and remove heat, so it can hold an exact temperature regardless of the outside heat and even freeze. It is far more efficient and powerful than a thermoelectric cool box, which can only cool to a set amount below the surrounding temperature. Most run on 12V or 24V in a vehicle and 240V at home.

What size portable fridge do I need?

For a couple on a weekend trip, 25 to 35 litres is usually enough. Families and longer trips often need 45 to 55 litres, and dual-zone models of 55 litres or more let you run a fridge and freezer side by side. Measure the space in your vehicle first, including the height with the lid open, and remember that a fuller fridge runs more efficiently than a half-empty one.

Can a portable fridge run off my car battery?

Yes, most portable fridges plug into a 12V socket and will run while you drive. When the engine is off, running a fridge from your starting battery can drain it, so most fridges have a battery protection setting that switches the fridge off before the battery gets too low to start the car. For longer stops, many people use a dual battery system, a portable power station or solar to keep the fridge running.

How much power does a portable fridge use?

Power use depends on the fridge size, the set temperature, the outside heat, how full it is and how often it is opened. Compressor fridges cycle on and off rather than running constantly, so their average draw is much lower than their peak. Keeping the fridge in the shade, pre-chilling it at home on mains power, and minimising lid openings all reduce consumption. The product page lists each model's power specifications.

Can a portable fridge freeze as well as chill?

Yes, most compressor fridges can be set anywhere from fridge temperatures down to freezing, so you can use them as a fridge, a freezer or, in dual-zone models, both at once. That means you can carry frozen meat and ice blocks on long trips without ice melting. Single-zone fridges run at one temperature, so choose a dual-zone model if you want both at the same time.

What is the difference between single-zone and dual-zone fridges?

A single-zone fridge has one compartment set to one temperature, either fridge or freezer. A dual-zone fridge has two compartments with independent temperature controls, so you can keep food chilled in one side and frozen in the other. Dual-zone models are larger and cost more, but they are ideal for long trips where you want frozen supplies and cold drinks without carrying a second fridge.

How do I mount a portable fridge in my vehicle?

A fridge should be secured so it cannot move in sudden braking or an accident. Use tie-down straps to anchor points, a mounting bracket, or a fridge slide that also makes it easy to pull out and open in a canopy or wagon. Leave space around the vents so the compressor can breathe. A protective transit bag adds insulation and protects the fridge from scrapes and dust.

Do portable fridges work in hot weather?

Compressor fridges are designed to hold their set temperature in hot conditions, which is a key advantage over coolers and thermoelectric boxes. In very hot weather they work harder and use more power, so keep the fridge in the shade, make sure it has good ventilation around the compressor vents, and use an insulated cover. Pre-cooling food and the fridge before you leave also reduces the load.
