Men's Beanies

Men's beanies to keep the cold out, from fine merino and technical knits for active days to chunky cuffed beanies for around town. Our range features The North Face, Patagonia, Just Another Fisherman and Arc'teryx, in styles for the summit, the sideline and the street.

The right beanie depends on warmth and use. Merino and technical knits are warm for their weight, breathable and quick to dry, ideal for hiking, running and layering under a hood; thicker acrylic and wool-blend beanies give cosy everyday warmth. Consider whether you want a cuffed or uncuffed fit, a slouchy or snug shape, and whether you will wear it under a helmet or hood, which suits a thinner, close-fitting beanie.

Frequently asked questions about men's beanies

What is the warmest type of beanie?

For pure warmth, a thicker knit or a fleece-lined beanie traps the most heat, which is why they are popular for standing around in the cold. For warmth without bulk, merino wool is hard to beat: it is warm for its weight, breathable and keeps insulating even when damp. If you want maximum warmth for winter, choose a thicker or lined beanie; for active use, a merino one balances warmth and breathability.

Are merino beanies better than acrylic ones?

They are better for performance, which is why merino dominates the outdoor range. Merino wool regulates temperature, wicks moisture, resists odour and stays warm when damp, making it ideal for hiking, running and travel. Acrylic is cheaper and comes in lots of styles, and is perfectly good for casual everyday warmth. For active outdoor use choose merino; for a budget everyday beanie, acrylic does the job.

What is the difference between a cuffed and uncuffed beanie?

A cuffed beanie has a folded band around the edge, which adds a double layer of warmth over your ears and gives a classic look. An uncuffed or roll-up beanie is a single layer and can be worn snug or slouchy, offering more flexibility in fit and style. It is mostly about look and how much you want covering your ears; cuffed tends to be a touch warmer at the band.

Can I wear a beanie under a helmet or hood?

Yes, and a thin one is ideal for it. A fine merino or technical beanie fits under a bike, ski or climbing helmet and under a jacket hood without adding bulk, sealing in warmth on cold days. Thicker beanies are too bulky for that, so keep a thin, close-fitting beanie for layering and save the chunky one for casual wear.

Will a beanie stretch out over time?

Some stretch is normal with wear, but quality beanies are knitted to hold their shape and spring back. To keep the fit, wash them gently in cool water and dry them flat rather than hanging or tumble drying, as heat and weight are what stretch or shrink a beanie. Well cared for, a good beanie keeps its shape for many seasons.

How do I wash a beanie?

Check the label, but most beanies do best hand washed or on a gentle cool cycle with mild detergent, then reshaped and dried flat away from direct heat. Merino needs gentle treatment and no fabric softener to keep its performance. Avoid hot water and the tumble dryer, which can shrink wool and distort the knit. Dried flat, a beanie holds its shape and stays fresh.
