Men's Caps

Men's caps for everyday, sport and the outdoors, from classic six-panel and dad caps to technical running caps and trucker styles. Our range features Patagonia, Just Another Fisherman, The North Face, Arc'teryx and Simms, in the colours and fits that go with everything.

Caps differ in fit and fabric. Structured caps hold their shape while unstructured and dad caps sit softer and lower; trucker caps have a mesh back for breathability; and technical running caps use lightweight, quick-drying fabric with a sweatband. Look at the closure too: snapback and buckle styles adjust to fit most heads, while fitted caps come in set sizes. Pick the brim and fabric for how you will wear it, from the water to the trail to town.

Frequently asked questions about men's caps

What is the difference between structured and unstructured caps?

A structured cap has stiffening in the front panels so it holds a firm, rounded shape and stands up off your head. An unstructured or dad cap has no stiffening, so it sits softer, lower and more relaxed. Structured caps look sharper and more sporty; unstructured caps are more casual and comfortable straight out of the box. It is mostly a style preference, so choose the look and feel you like.

What is a trucker cap, and when is it best?

A trucker cap has a foam or structured front and a mesh back, usually with a snapback closure. The mesh makes it noticeably cooler and more breathable than a full-fabric cap, which is why truckers are popular for hot days, fishing and summer wear. If you run warm or spend long days in the sun, a trucker keeps your head cooler than a solid-back cap.

How do I get the right cap size and fit?

Most caps are adjustable with a snapback, buckle or strap and fit a wide range of head sizes, so they are an easy choice. Fitted caps come in set sizes, so measure around your head just above your ears and check the size chart. A cap should sit level and feel secure without pinching. If you are between fitted sizes, size up and rely on any internal adjustment.

Are running caps different from everyday caps?

Yes. Running and technical caps use lightweight, quick-drying performance fabric, often with a sweat-wicking band and a breathable build, so they stay comfortable when you heat up. Everyday caps prioritise style and durability in cotton or heavier fabrics. If you want a cap for exercise, a technical running cap will feel much better than a standard cotton one once you start sweating.

How do I wash a cap without ruining its shape?

Hand wash or spot clean is safest. Use cool water and a little mild detergent, gently work at any marks with a soft brush, then rinse and air dry over something round, like a jar or a balled towel, so the brim keeps its curve. Avoid hot water, the dishwasher and the dryer, which can shrink the cap or distort a structured brim.

Are caps enough sun protection, or do I need a sun hat?

A cap shades your face and eyes but leaves your ears and the back of your neck exposed, which are common spots for sunburn. For everyday and short spells outside a cap is fine, but for long days in New Zealand's strong sun a wide-brim sun hat that covers your ears and neck is a better choice. Many people own both and reach for the sun hat when they will be out for hours.

How do I reshape or curve a cap brim?

Most modern brims can be gently shaped by hand over time simply by curving them the way you like. For a firmer curve, some people lightly dampen the brim with warm water and then hold the shape, for example by tucking it into a curved mug to dry. Work gradually rather than forcing a stiff brim, and avoid heat, which can crack or discolour it.
