Frequently asked questions about lifestyle sunglasses

How do I choose sunglasses for my face shape?

A simple rule is to choose frames that contrast with your face shape. Round faces suit angular or rectangular frames, square faces suit rounder or aviator styles, and oval faces suit most shapes. The frame should be roughly as wide as your face, with your eyebrows sitting just above the top of the frame. Trying on a few styles in person is the quickest way to see what works for you.

Are polarised sunglasses good for driving?

Yes, polarised lenses cut glare from wet roads, other cars and the dashboard, which reduces eye strain on long drives and in low sun. A grey or brown category 2 or 3 lens is ideal. The one drawback is that polarisation can make some digital dashboard displays, head-up displays and phone screens harder to read, so check yours with the sunglasses on. Never drive in very dark category 4 lenses.

What is the difference between Oakley Prizm and standard lenses?

Oakley Prizm lenses are designed to fine-tune colour and contrast, boosting the colours your eyes use to pick out detail, so the world looks sharper and more vivid than through a standard tinted lens. Different Prizm versions are designed for different settings, such as everyday, road, trail, snow and water. Many Prizm lenses are also available polarised for extra glare reduction.

Should I choose metal or plastic frames?

Metal frames, such as classic aviators, are slim and light with adjustable nose pads for a tailored fit, and they suit a timeless, smart look. Plastic or acetate frames are more durable for active use, come in more colours and shapes, and often sit more securely without adjusting. Lightweight performance plastics are very comfortable for all-day wear. Choose based on your style and how hard you will be on them.

Are expensive sunglasses really better than cheap ones?

The biggest differences are in optics, durability and protection. Quality sunglasses use precisely shaped lenses that do not distort your view, reliable UV protection, better polarising and coatings, and frames and hinges that last for years. Cheap sunglasses can cause eye strain and may not protect as well. For sunglasses you wear every day, investing in a good pair usually pays off over time.

Can I wear lifestyle sunglasses for sport?

For light activity like walking, golf or a casual paddle, many lifestyle sunglasses work well. For running, cycling and high-speed sport, dedicated sports sunglasses are better because they grip securely without bouncing, are lighter, and use impact-resistant lenses with wider coverage. Some lifestyle frames from performance brands bridge both, so check the frame's grip and lens material if you want one pair for everything.

How do I stop my sunglasses slipping down my nose?

Start with the right fit: frames that are too wide or heavy for your face tend to slide. Metal frames with adjustable nose pads can be tweaked to sit higher and tighter, and an optometrist or optical store can adjust the arms so they grip behind your ears. Rubberised nose pads and temple tips help a lot when you sweat. Keeping them clean of sunscreen and oil also stops them sliding.
