About Ray-Ban

Ray-Ban was created in 1937 to protect the eyes of pilots, who needed sunglasses that cut glare at altitude. The result was the Aviator, with its teardrop shaped lenses and thin metal frame, and the name came from its job: banning the sun's rays. In 1952 Ray-Ban introduced the Wayfarer, a bold plastic frame that became one of the most recognisable sunglasses ever made, worn by musicians, actors and everyday people for decades.

Today Ray-Ban is one of the most famous eyewear brands in the world, known for timeless styles that never seem to go out of fashion. Many of its frames have barely changed in decades, which is a big part of their appeal, as a well chosen pair can be worn for years.

Classic frames

The Wayfarer remains the brand's signature frame, and the Mega Wayfarer II offers a bolder, slightly larger take on the classic. The Aviator Large Metal keeps the original pilot shape, the Clubmaster has a retro browline design, and the Hexagonal brings a modern geometric look. Frames such as the Justin, Elliot, Brunel, Boyfriend Two, RB2236 and RB2238 offer a range of shapes and sizes to suit different faces.

Ray-Ban's G-15 lens, a grey green tint introduced in the 1950s, transmits colours naturally while cutting brightness and glare, and many frames are available with polarized lenses for extra glare reduction near water.

Ray-Ban Meta and Ray-Ban at Land & Sea

Ray-Ban Meta glasses combine the classic Wayfarer look with smart technology, including a built in camera for photos and video, open ear speakers for music and calls, and a voice assistant, so you can capture and share moments hands free. The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 3) comes in Regular and Large sizes.

At Land & Sea we stock a wide range of Ray-Ban sunglasses, and our team can help you find the right frame shape, size and lens for your face and how you will wear them.

Frequently asked questions about Ray-Ban

What is a Ray-Ban G-15 lens?

The G-15 is Ray-Ban's classic grey green lens, introduced in the 1950s. It absorbs around 85 percent of visible light, transmitting about 15 percent, which is where the name comes from. The green tint keeps colours looking natural while cutting brightness and glare, making it comfortable for everyday wear in bright sun. G-15 lenses are available in both standard and polarized versions across many Ray-Ban frames.

What is the difference between the Wayfarer and Mega Wayfarer?

The Ray-Ban Wayfarer is the classic trapezoid shaped frame introduced in 1952. The Mega Wayfarer II is a bolder version, with a slightly larger and more rounded shape and thicker frame details, giving more coverage and a more modern look. Both share the same recognisable style. Choose the original Wayfarer for a classic fit, or the Mega Wayfarer II if you prefer a bigger, bolder frame.

What can Ray-Ban Meta glasses do?

Ray-Ban Meta glasses look like classic Ray-Ban sunglasses but include smart technology. A built in camera lets you take photos and record video hands free, open ear speakers let you listen to music, podcasts and calls without earbuds, and a voice assistant lets you ask questions and control features by speaking. They pair with an app on your phone. Check the product page for full details of the current Gen 3 model.

Are polarized Ray-Bans worth it?

Polarized lenses cut the glare that reflects off water, wet roads, snow and other flat surfaces, which makes them more comfortable for driving, boating, fishing and beach days. They also reduce eye strain in bright conditions. Ray-Ban offers polarized versions of many frames, marked Polar or Polarized. If you spend a lot of time near water or driving in bright sun, polarized lenses are well worth considering.

Which Ray-Ban frame suits my face shape?

A good rule is to choose frames that contrast with your face shape. Round faces suit angular frames like the Wayfarer, square faces suit rounder or aviator styles, and oval faces suit most shapes. The frame should sit comfortably on your nose, not touch your cheeks, and roughly match the width of your face. Trying frames on in store is the easiest way to find what looks and feels right.

How should I clean my Ray-Ban sunglasses?

Rinse your Ray-Ban sunglasses in lukewarm water to remove dust and grit before wiping, especially after the beach. Clean the lenses with a drop of mild soap or lens cleaner and dry them with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid paper towels, clothing and household cleaners, which can scratch lenses or damage coatings. Store them in their case when you are not wearing them to protect the frame and lenses.
