Roof Racks & Boxes

Cargo Boxes & Crates

Cargo boxes, crates and roof boxes that keep gear secure and organised on the roof, in the tray or in the back of the wagon. Our range features YETI, Bush Storage and Front Runner, from tough stackable crates to rooftop cargo boxes with quick-release mounts.

Use stackable crates to organise recovery gear, tools and camp kitchen kit, and a rooftop cargo box or crate on your roof platform to free up space inside the vehicle. Secure everything with the right mounts and brackets.

See how the boxes stack and mount at our Grey Lynn concept store, or order online for tracked delivery across New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions about cargo boxes and crates

Roof box or cargo crate - which is better?

A hard-shell roof box is enclosed and lockable, keeping gear dry and secure, and its aerodynamic shape is quieter and more fuel-efficient on the road. An open or lidded cargo crate is tougher, often cheaper, and better for dirty, wet or awkward gear like recovery boards, firewood and wet ropes. Many overlanders use crates for rugged gear and a box for clothing and bedding.

Are rooftop cargo boxes waterproof?

Most quality roof boxes and lidded crates are designed to be highly weather resistant, keeping out rain and road spray, but very few are fully waterproof in driving rain at speed or when hosed directly. For anything that must stay dry, such as sleeping bags and electronics, pack it in dry bags inside the box. Check the seals regularly and keep them clean so they keep sealing well.

How do quick-release mounts work on a cargo box?

Quick-release mounts clamp a cargo box or crate to your roof rack or platform with levers or knobs rather than bolts, so you can fit or remove it in minutes without tools. That makes it easy to take the box off between trips, which saves fuel and wind noise. Look for lockable quick-release mounts if you will leave the box on the vehicle when it is parked.

What should I store in stackable cargo crates?

Stackable crates are ideal for organising the back of a 4WD, ute or wagon: recovery gear, tools and spares in one, camp kitchen kit in another, and food or clothing in a third. Labelling them makes it quick to find what you need. Strong, lockable lids let you stack them securely, and crates that strap down or bolt into place stay put on rough roads.

Can cargo crates be used as a seat or table at camp?

Many tough cargo crates and gear boxes are strong enough to sit or stand on, which makes them a handy seat, step or makeshift table at camp. Check the product's load rating before using it as a step. A flat lid with tie-down points also makes a good base for strapping extra gear on top while you are driving, such as a folded chair or a bag of firewood.

How do I secure cargo boxes in a ute tray?

Use proper ratchet straps or cam straps through the box's tie-down points or handles, anchored to the tray's tie-down rings, so the box cannot slide or lift. Some crates have mounting kits that bolt directly to tray rails or platforms. Avoid relying on bungee cords. Check straps after the first few kilometres and at every stop, especially on corrugated roads where vibration can loosen them.
