About PENN
PENN was founded in 1932 in Philadelphia by Otto Henze, a German-born engineer who set out to build tough, reliable fishing reels. Its reels quickly earned a reputation for strength in saltwater, and for decades PENN has been the brand that anglers trust when fishing for big, hard fighting fish. Its motto, built for battle, sums up its approach.
In New Zealand, PENN is known for reels and rods that can handle kingfish, snapper, hapuka and game fish, from rock and beach fishing to deep drop and jigging offshore.
Spin and overhead reels
The Slammer IV is one of PENN's toughest spin reels, with a sealed body that keeps out water and sand and a powerful drag, in sizes from 3500 for soft baiting to 10500 for kingfish, tuna and big fish from the rocks. The Spinfisher VII is a sealed, versatile reel for soft baiting and general fishing, the Battle IV is a strong, great value reel for everyday saltwater fishing, and the Authority is a premium sealed spin reel.
For overhead fishing, the Fathom II comes in lever drag and star drag versions, the Squall II lever drag reels suit boat fishing and light game, and the International 50 VISW is a two speed game reel. For deep drop fishing, the Fathom 50 and Fathom 80 electric reels do the hard work of winding up from great depths.
Rods, combos and PENN at Land & Sea
PENN rods include the Ocean Assassin II, a heavy deep drop bent butt rod, the Allegiance II and Allegiance III overhead jigging rods, the Mercenary soft bait rods, the Prevail II rock and surf rods, and the Tidal XR land based surf rods. PENN combos pair matched rods and reels for boat and bait fishing. PENN saltwater pliers, leader gloves and fillet knives round out the range.

Frequently asked questions about PENN
Which PENN Slammer IV size should I choose?
Choose by the fish you target and the line you use. A Slammer IV 3500 suits soft baiting and general boat fishing, a 6500 or 7500 suits casting stickbaits and jigging for kingfish, and the 8500 and 10500 sizes suit big kingfish, tuna and heavy rock fishing. HS models have a faster gear ratio for working lures. Match the reel to a rod with a similar line rating for a balanced setup.
What does a sealed fishing reel mean?
A sealed reel, such as the PENN Slammer IV, Spinfisher VII or Authority, has seals and gaskets that help keep water, salt and sand out of the body and drag system. That protects the internal gears and bearings, so the reel keeps working smoothly in rough conditions, when it gets dunked in the surf or splashed in the boat. Sealed reels still need rinsing in fresh water after each trip.
What is the difference between lever drag and star drag reels?
A star drag overhead reel adjusts its drag with a star shaped wheel next to the handle, which is simple and affordable. A lever drag reel, such as the PENN Fathom II and Squall II lever drag models, uses a lever to set the drag, letting you move smoothly between preset strike and free spool positions and adjust it precisely during a fight. Lever drags suit game fishing, jigging and larger fish.
What is a bent butt deep drop rod?
A bent butt deep drop rod, such as the PENN Ocean Assassin II, has a curved butt section that angles the rod down when it sits in a rod holder or gimbal. That lowers the angle of pull and gives more leverage when winding heavy sinkers and large fish up from great depths, often paired with an electric reel such as the PENN Fathom 50 or Fathom 80. It is designed for hapuka, bluenose and other deep water species.
How do I look after a PENN reel?
After every trip, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel gently with fresh water while the drag is tightened, so water does not get pushed into the drag, then wipe it dry and back the drag off before storing. Avoid high pressure hoses. Every so often, add a drop of reel oil to the handle knob and line roller, and have the reel serviced regularly if you fish often or after a heavy dunking.
What are PENN Allegiance rods used for?
PENN Allegiance rods are overhead jigging rods designed for slow pitch and general jigging for kingfish, snapper, hapuka and other species. They come in a range of lengths and PE ratings, such as PE 2 to 4, so you can match the rod to the jig weight and line you use. Pair an Allegiance rod with a compact overhead reel, such as a PENN Fathom II, for a balanced jigging setup.
