Light Spin Rods
Light spin rods for trout, salmon, canal fishing and light harbour work, from ultralight finesse rods to longer canal rods. Our range is led by Shimano and Daiwa, alongside Okuma, Abu Garcia and CD Rods.

Frequently asked questions about light spin rods
What light spin rod is best for trout fishing?
For spin fishing for trout in rivers and lakes, a 6 foot 6 to 7 foot 6 rod rated around 1 to 4 kg or 2 to 5 kg is ideal. It casts small spinners, minnows and soft baits accurately and protects light line when a fish jumps. Choose a shorter rod for small, overgrown streams, and a longer one for big rivers and lake shores where casting distance matters.
What is a canal rod?
Canal rods are longer light spin rods, often 8 to 9 feet, designed for fishing the South Island hydro canals for large trout and salmon. The extra length helps cast further across the canal, control fish in the current and keep the line clear of weed. They are typically rated for light to medium line so you can use the small lures and baits canal fish respond to while handling big fish.
What lure weight can a light spin rod cast?
Light spin rods are usually rated for lures of around 2 to 15 grams, covering small spinners, spoons, minnows and light jig heads. Ultralight rods handle even smaller lures for finesse fishing. Using lures within the rated range casts best and keeps the rod working properly; lures that are too heavy can damage the tip, while very light lures will not load the rod enough to cast well.
Can I use a light spin rod in salt water?
Yes, light spin rods are great for harbour fishing for kahawai, trevally, small snapper and mullet with small soft baits and metals, and they make light fishing a lot of fun. Rinse the rod and reel with fresh water after each saltwater session. Be aware that a big snapper or kingfish can overpower a light rod, so step up to a heavier rod if you expect larger fish.
What line should I use on a light spin outfit?
For trout and light harbour fishing, 4 to 8 lb mono or light braid around PE 0.4 to 0.8 with a fluorocarbon leader works well. Light line casts small lures further and is less visible in clear water. Braid gives more sensitivity and casting distance, while mono is more forgiving with jumping fish and easier for beginners. Check your local freshwater rules for any gear restrictions.
Do I need a fishing licence to use a light spin rod for trout?
Yes, fishing for trout and salmon in New Zealand's rivers and lakes requires a freshwater fishing licence from Fish and Game, regardless of the gear you use. Licences are available for a day, a season or longer, and the rules, seasons and bag limits vary between regions and waters. Always check the regulations for the water you plan to fish before heading out.
