Men's Shorts
Men's shorts for training, hiking, water and everyday, from running and gym shorts to rugged hiking and casual walk shorts. Our range features Just Another Fisherman, The North Face, Columbia, Patagonia and On, in the lengths and fabrics to suit.
Choose your shorts by activity. Running and training shorts are light and breathable, often with a built-in liner; hiking shorts add durability, stretch and pockets for the trail; and casual walk shorts cover everyday summer wear. Inseam length changes the look and feel, from short and free for running to longer for casual, so pick the length and whether you want a liner for how you will wear them.

Frequently asked questions about men's shorts
What is the difference between running, hiking and casual shorts?
Running shorts are the lightest and most breathable, usually short with a built-in liner for support. Hiking shorts are tougher, with stretch, a longer cut and pockets for the trail. Casual walk shorts prioritise everyday style and comfort. Using the right type matters: running shorts feel great on a run but flimsy on a scrubby trail, while hiking shorts are overkill for the gym.
What does inseam length mean, and what should I choose?
Inseam is the length of the inner leg seam from crotch to hem, and it sets how long the shorts are. Shorter inseams, around 5 to 7 inches, are cooler and free for running and hot days; mid lengths, 7 to 9 inches, are the versatile everyday choice; longer, 9 inches and up, give more coverage for casual and hiking wear. Pick by the look you like and how much leg coverage you want.
Do running shorts have a built-in liner?
Most do. The liner is a lightweight inner brief or longer support layer that provides support and reduces chafing, so you can run without separate underwear. If you prefer to wear your own underwear or want the shorts for non-running use, look for an unlined pair or one with a removable liner. For running specifically, a good liner makes a real comfort difference.
Are hiking shorts worth it over regular shorts?
For time on the trail, yes. Hiking shorts use durable, quick-drying stretch fabric that shrugs off scrapes, dries fast and moves with you, plus secure pockets for phone and keys, which regular casual shorts lack. For a walk in the park regular shorts are fine, but for real tramping and scrambling, purpose-built hiking shorts are more comfortable and far more hard-wearing.
What length of shorts suits me best?
It is mostly personal preference and proportion, but a common guide is the hem landing around mid-thigh to just above the knee for a balanced everyday look. Taller people can carry longer lengths; shorter inseams suit running and hot weather. Try to match the length to the activity and your comfort rather than chasing trends, since you will wear them most if they feel right.
Can I swim in regular shorts, or do I need swimming shorts?
You can swim in regular shorts in a pinch, but they are not made for it: they soak up water, stay heavy and wet for ages, and can chafe. Swimming shorts and boardshorts use quick-drying fabric designed to get wet and dry fast, and are far more comfortable in and out of the water. If you swim regularly, a dedicated pair of swimming shorts is well worth it.
How should shorts fit at the waist?
The waist should sit comfortably without needing to be cinched hard or held up, whether it is a fixed waistband with a belt, an elastic waist, or a drawcord. For active shorts, an elastic or drawcord waist gives the most freedom of movement. You should be able to move, sit and bend comfortably, so if the waist digs in or gapes, size up or down accordingly.
