Hiking Tents

Land & Sea stocks the best range of hiking tents in New Zealand, in 1-person, 2-person, 3-person and 4-person sizes. Whether you are heading out solo or with a partner, our ultralight and lightweight builds keep pack weight down without giving up performance.

Every tent here is chosen for the weather New Zealand can throw at you: sturdy construction, robust waterproofing and designs light enough to carry all day. Brands include Coleman, Kiwi Camping, Marmot, MSR, Orson and Zempire, so there is a shelter to match the trip, whether that is a summer overnighter or a shoulder season traverse.

The right hiking tent strikes the balance between weight and function, so you can focus on the adventure rather than the load on your back. Not sure what suits your trip? Read our guide to choosing the best tent for your next adventure, or call into any Land & Sea store for a hands on look.

Frequently asked questions about hiking tents

What size hiking tent do I need?

We stock 1-person, 2-person, 3-person and 4-person hiking tents. Unlike family camping, where we suggest upsizing, hiking is the one category where we recommend staying true to the number of people sleeping in the tent, because every extra person adds weight and packed size to your pack. If you are happy to carry a little more for the extra room, going up one size gives you space for wet gear.

How light should a hiking tent be?

As light as possible, with a couple of factors at play. As a general rule of thumb, the higher your budget the more compact your tent can be, thanks to higher-quality materials. Weight also depends on the size you choose. If you are travelling by foot or bike, our recommendation is to go as light and compact as you can afford.

What is the difference between an ultralight and a lightweight hiking tent?

There is no fixed industry standard for either term, so treat them as a guide to where a tent sits on the weight scale rather than a strict category. Ultralight generally describes the lightest tents in the range, using thinner fabrics and minimal poles for people counting every gram. Lightweight tents carry a little more weight in exchange for hardier materials and more living space. Always compare the packed weight listed on each product page.

Are your hiking tents waterproof enough for New Zealand weather?

We source tents crafted from high-quality materials, with sturdy construction and robust waterproofing, to handle whatever New Zealand throws at you. Tents are rated with an MM rating, which measures the water pressure the fabric can withstand before it begins to leak. Hiking tents are generally rated between 800mm and 10,000mm, so match the rating to the conditions you intend to camp in.

Do I need a footprint for my hiking tent?

Footprints are highly recommended for most tents, but most definitely for hiking tents. A footprint takes up minimal extra room in your pack and adds a reduction in condensation, extra warmth, greater durability, additional waterproofing and an easier set up by acting as a template.

Which brands of hiking tents do you stock?

We carry the best brands in the market, including Coleman, Kiwi Camping, Marmot, MSR, Orson and Zempire. Between them the range covers everything from an affordable first tent through to ultralight shelters built for serious backcountry missions.
