About Shimano
Shimano was founded in 1921 in Sakai, Japan, by Shozaburo Shimano, and is known worldwide for bicycle components as well as fishing tackle. It began making fishing reels in the 1970s and has since become one of the biggest names in fishing, with a reputation for smooth, precise reels built to tight tolerances.
Many Shimano reels share technology across the range, such as cold-forged Hagane gears and rigid bodies that keep the gears aligned under load, so even mid-priced models stay smooth for years.
Reels and rods for every kind of fishing
For soft baiting and light spin fishing, the Sedona, Vanford, Stradic and Twin Power are popular choices, with the Stella as Shimano's flagship spin reel. Saragosa SW and Stella SW reels handle heavier saltwater work such as topwater fishing. Offshore, Talica two-speed reels and Torium and Tekota overheads suit jigging and bottom fishing, Tiagra lever-drag reels are a mainstay of game fishing, and Beastmaster electric reels take the work out of deep-water drops.
Shimano rods, including the Ocea range for topwater and jigging, are matched to those reels, along with Grappler braid, lures and terminal tackle.
Shimano at Land & Sea
We carry one of New Zealand's largest Shimano ranges, from soft bait reels and combos for the harbour to game reels and rods for marlin and tuna. Shimano is one of the most popular reel brands among New Zealand anglers, and our team fishes with it. If you are choosing between models, we can help you match reel size, gear ratio and line class to the fishing you actually do.
Alongside the reels, we stock Shimano rod and reel combos that take the guesswork out of matching gear, plus tackle storage, braid and leaders, and lures from micro jigs and slow pitch jigs to knife jigs for kingfish. That makes it easy to put together a complete Shimano setup for soft baiting, jigging or surfcasting in one place.
Frequently asked questions about Shimano
Is Shimano a good fishing brand?
Yes. Shimano is one of the most respected fishing tackle brands in the world, known for smooth, reliable reels built to tight tolerances and for rods, lures and line designed to match them. Its range runs from affordable spin reels for beginners to flagship models like the Stella and game reels like the Tiagra, so there is a Shimano option for almost every budget and style of fishing in New Zealand.
What is the best Shimano reel for soft baiting in New Zealand?
For soft baiting, most anglers choose a 2500 to 4000 size spin reel matched to a light, fast rod and thin braid. The Sedona and Vanford are great value, the Stradic is a step up in smoothness and durability, and the Twin Power and Stella are premium choices that stay smooth for years. Pick the size by the line weight you use and the fish you target, and match it to a rod of the right length and power.
What is the Shimano Stella?
The Stella is Shimano's flagship spin reel, built with its most advanced technology and finest tolerances. It is known for exceptional smoothness, a strong and consistent drag and a long working life. The standard Stella suits light and medium spin fishing, while the Stella SW is built for heavy saltwater use such as topwater and jigging. It is a serious investment, best suited to anglers who fish often and want a reel to last.
What is a Shimano Tiagra reel used for?
The Tiagra is Shimano's lever-drag game reel, built for big pelagic fish such as marlin, tuna and kingfish on heavy line. A lever drag lets you set and adjust drag pressure smoothly during a long fight, and the Tiagra's strength and reliability have made it a favourite on game boats around the world. Sizes such as the 50W and 80W suit different line classes, so choose by the line weight you plan to fish.
What is a two speed reel like the Shimano Talica?
A two speed reel has a high gear for fast retrieves and a low gear for extra cranking power, switched with a button or lever. The Shimano Talica uses this to handle both jobs: wind quickly to work a jig or bring line back in, then drop into low gear when a strong fish is pulling hard or you are lifting a heavy fish from deep water. It is popular for deep jigging, bottom fishing and lighter game fishing.
Are Shimano electric reels worth it?
For deep-water fishing, an electric reel such as the Shimano Beastmaster can make a big difference. It does the work of winding heavy sinkers and fish up from hundreds of metres, which saves your arms and back over a long day, and it lets you fish deep spots for species such as hapuku and bluenose that would be hard work by hand. It needs a suitable battery and a strong rod, so plan the whole setup together.
How do I look after a Shimano reel after saltwater fishing?
Rinse the reel gently with fresh water after every saltwater trip, with the drag done up so water does not get inside, then back the drag off and let it dry before storing it. Avoid blasting it with a hose or soaking it in a bucket. Wipe it down, lightly oil the handle knobs and line roller now and then, and have it serviced if it starts to feel rough. Regular care keeps a Shimano reel smooth for many years.
