About HOKA

HOKA was founded in 2009 in the French Alps by two trail runners who wanted to run downhill faster and more comfortably. Their solution was a shoe with a much thicker, lighter midsole than anything else at the time, and the idea of maximum cushioning quickly spread from ultra runners to road runners, walkers and hikers around the world. The original name, HOKA ONE ONE, is inspired by a Maori phrase often translated as fly over the earth.

Today HOKA is known for its cushioned, rocker shaped soles, which help your foot roll smoothly from heel to toe and make long days on your feet more comfortable.

Road and trail running

The Bondi 9 is HOKA's most cushioned road shoe, a favourite for long runs, recovery days and people who spend all day standing or walking. The Challenger 8 is a versatile road to trail shoe that handles footpaths, gravel and easy trails with equal comfort. On the trail, the Speedgoat 7 is a grippy, cushioned shoe for technical terrain, the Mafate 5 brings maximum cushioning to long trail runs, and the Tecton X 4 is a fast trail racer with a responsive plated midsole.

Wide fit versions of popular models, such as the Bondi 9 Wide, Challenger 8 Wide and Speedgoat 7 Wide, give extra room for broader feet.

Hiking, accessories and HOKA at Land & Sea

For hiking, the Kaha 3 GTX is a waterproof, cushioned boot for long days on the track, and the Mafate Hike brings HOKA's trail running comfort to a hiking shoe. The Hopara 2 is a protective hiking sandal for river crossings, beach walks and summer days. To round out your kit, the Trail Run Vest 10L carries water and essentials, and HOKA running socks are made to match.

At Land & Sea we stock a wide HOKA range for men and women, and our team can help you compare models and find the right fit for your feet and your favourite routes.

Frequently asked questions about HOKA

Why are HOKA shoes so cushioned?

HOKA was founded on the idea that a thicker but lighter midsole could make running, especially downhill, more comfortable. Its shoes use generous amounts of light foam and a rocker shaped sole that helps your foot roll smoothly from heel to toe. That combination reduces impact and fatigue on long runs and long days on your feet, which is why HOKA is popular with runners, walkers and people who stand all day at work.

What is the difference between the HOKA Bondi 9 and Challenger 8?

The HOKA Bondi 9 is the brand's most cushioned road shoe, built for maximum comfort on long runs and walks on hard surfaces. The Challenger 8 is a road to trail shoe with a slightly firmer feel and a more aggressive outsole, so it handles footpaths, gravel roads and easy trails. If you stay on the road, choose the Bondi 9. If your runs mix road and trail, the Challenger 8 is the more versatile choice.

Which HOKA shoe is best for trail running?

It depends on your trails. The Speedgoat 7 is HOKA's go-to trail shoe for technical, rocky and muddy terrain, with excellent grip and cushioning. The Mafate 5 adds maximum cushioning for long distances and ultras, and the Tecton X 4 is a fast, responsive racing shoe for runners chasing times. For mixed road and trail, the Challenger 8 is a great all-rounder. Wide fits are available in several models.

Does HOKA make wide fit shoes?

Yes. HOKA makes wide fit versions of several of its most popular shoes, including the Bondi 9 Wide, Challenger 8 Wide and Speedgoat 7 Wide. Wide fit models have more room through the forefoot and midfoot while keeping the same cushioning and design as the standard version. If you often feel pressure on the sides of your feet or your toes feel cramped, it is worth trying a wide fit.

Is the HOKA Kaha 3 GTX good for tramping?

Yes. The HOKA Kaha 3 GTX is a waterproof hiking boot with a GORE-TEX membrane, HOKA's signature cushioning and a grippy outsole, designed for long days on the track with a pack. It offers more ankle support and protection than a trail running shoe, while still feeling light and comfortable. For multi-day tramps over rough terrain, it is a comfortable alternative to heavier traditional boots.

What is the HOKA Hopara 2?

The HOKA Hopara 2 is a hiking sandal designed for summer adventures, river crossings and beach walks. It has a protective toe cap, a cushioned midsole, a grippy outsole and an adjustable lacing system, so it feels more secure than a typical sandal on rough ground. Because it drains quickly and dries fast, it suits wet conditions where a closed shoe would stay soaked, such as walking up streams and gorges.
