About Norrona

Norrona is a family-owned Norwegian outdoor brand founded in 1929 in Oslo by Jorgen Jorgensen, and it is still run by the same family today. Norway's mountains, fjords and wild coast are its testing ground, and its clothing is designed to cope with the kind of fast changing, wet and windy weather that New Zealanders know well.

Norrona names its collections after real places in Norway that suit each product's purpose, so every line is built around a particular activity, from alpine climbing to trail running and coastal adventures. The brand is known for bold colours, clean design and some of the most technical shells on the market.

Shells for wild weather

The falketind collection is Norrona's versatile mountain range, and the falketind Gore-Tex jacket is a lightweight, waterproof and breathable shell for tramping, ski touring and alpine days. The trollveggen collection, named after Europe's tallest vertical rock face, is built for the most demanding alpine climbing, and the trollveggen Gore-Tex Pro light jacket uses Gore-Tex Pro for maximum durability in harsh conditions.

The senja collection is designed for fast and light movement, and the senja Gore-Tex jacket is a minimalist shell for trail running and fast hiking where weight matters.

Layers, pants and Norrona at Land & Sea

Under the shell, the femund and falketind fleece and insulated layers, labelled warm and thermo, keep you warm on cold days, while femund tech tees and falketind equaliser merino tops handle the base layer. The falketind flex pants are stretchy, durable trousers for tramping and climbing. The /29 collection adds caps, beanies and gloves with a nod to the founding year.

At Land & Sea we carry a wide Norrona range for men and women, and our team can help you build a layering system for your next mountain trip. Norrona's sizing is designed for layering, so try your shell on over a fleece before you choose.

Frequently asked questions about Norrona

Where is Norrona from?

Norrona is a Norwegian outdoor clothing brand, founded in Oslo in 1929 by Jorgen Jorgensen and still owned and run by the same family. Its collections are named after places in Norway, and its products are tested in the country's mountains and on its wild coast. That background means Norrona clothing is designed for cold, wet and windy weather, which suits the conditions found in the New Zealand outdoors very well.

What is the difference between Norrona falketind and trollveggen?

Falketind is Norrona's versatile mountain collection, designed for tramping, ski touring and general alpine use, balancing weight, breathability and durability. Trollveggen is built for the most demanding alpine climbing and harsh conditions, so its jackets use tougher fabrics such as Gore-Tex Pro and have features geared to climbing harnesses and helmets. Choose falketind for all-round use and trollveggen for technical alpine trips.

What do warm and thermo mean on Norrona clothing?

Norrona uses warm and thermo to label its insulation. Warm1, warm2 and warm3 describe fleece and synthetic insulated pieces, with higher numbers offering more warmth. Thermo40 and thermo60 describe insulated hoods and jackets, with the number giving an idea of the amount of insulation. The labels make it easy to compare layers across collections and choose one to match the temperatures you expect.

Is the Norrona senja jacket good for trail running?

Yes. The senja collection is Norrona's fast and light range, and the senja Gore-Tex jacket is a minimalist waterproof shell built for trail running, fast hiking and other high output activities. It is lighter and more packable than the falketind or trollveggen shells, so it is easy to carry in a running vest. It trades some durability for low weight, so choose falketind for heavy pack wear.

How do I wash a Gore-Tex jacket?

Close all the zips and Velcro, then machine wash the jacket on a warm cycle with a small amount of liquid detergent or a technical wash, avoiding fabric softener and bleach. Rinse twice to remove any detergent. Tumble drying on a gentle warm setting, if the care label allows, helps reactivate the water repellent finish. Wash your shell regularly, as dirt and body oils reduce breathability.

What is the Norrona /29 collection?

The /29 collection is named after the year Norrona was founded, 1929. It is the brand's lifestyle range of caps, beanies, gloves and other accessories, designed with the same clean look and quality as its technical clothing but for everyday wear. Pieces such as the /29 five panel tech cap and snap back trucker cap are popular for travel and town, and they pair well with Norrona's outdoor jackets.
