About Osprey

Osprey started in 1974, when Mike Pfotenhauer began hand-making backpacks in Santa Cruz, California. The focus then was the same as it is now: packs that carry weight comfortably, fit properly and last for years. That obsession with fit and carry has made Osprey one of the most recognised pack brands on the trail, at the airport and on the daily commute.

Osprey designs separate men's and women's versions of many of its packs, shaped around different torso lengths, shoulder widths and hip profiles, and offers several sizes so the harness sits where it should.

Packs for every kind of trip

For tramping and backpacking, the Atmos AG and Aura AG use Osprey's Anti-Gravity suspension, a tensioned mesh back panel that wraps the pack around your body and keeps air moving, while the Aether and Ariel carry heavier loads on longer trips. Day hikers reach for the Talon and Tempest, light and close-fitting with plenty of pockets.

Travellers know Osprey for the Farpoint and Fairview travel packs, which open like a suitcase but carry like a backpack, and for the Transporter range of tough duffels and totes that swallow gear for road trips, boats and baggage carousels.

The All Mighty Guarantee

Osprey backs its packs with the All Mighty Guarantee, its promise to repair damage or defects, and replace a pack where a repair is not possible. Claims are handled by Osprey, so it is worth keeping your purchase details. It is one of the reasons Osprey packs so often outlast the trips they were bought for.

At Land & Sea we carry a wide selection of Osprey packs and bags for New Zealand conditions, from day walks in the Waitakere Ranges to Great Walks and long-haul flights.

Frequently asked questions about Osprey

Is Osprey a good backpack brand?

Osprey is one of the most respected pack brands in the world, known for comfortable carry systems, careful fit and durable construction. Many models come in men's and women's specific versions and several harness sizes, so they fit a wide range of bodies. Add the All Mighty Guarantee and a huge range from day packs to expedition packs, and Osprey is a safe choice for tramping, travel and everyday use.

What is Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee?

The All Mighty Guarantee is Osprey's promise to repair damage or defects in its packs, and to replace a pack if it cannot be repaired. It covers a wide range of issues beyond simple manufacturing faults, which is unusual in the outdoor industry. Claims go through Osprey directly, so keep your purchase details and check Osprey's current guarantee terms before you send a pack in.

What is the difference between the Osprey Farpoint and Fairview?

The Farpoint and Fairview are Osprey's travel packs, built for the same job: a pack that opens like a suitcase but carries like a backpack, with stowable harness and hip belt for check-in. The Farpoint is the men's version and the Fairview is the women's version, with the harness and hip belt shaped around women's torsos, shoulders and hips. Choose by fit rather than colour or label.

Which Osprey pack is best for tramping in New Zealand?

For day walks, the Talon and Tempest are light, close-fitting and well organised. For overnight and multi-day tramps, the Atmos AG and Aura AG are popular for their ventilated Anti-Gravity back panel and comfortable carry, while the Aether and Ariel suit heavier loads and longer trips. Choose capacity by your trip length and gear, then get the harness size right for your torso.

What does AG mean on Osprey packs?

AG stands for Anti-Gravity, Osprey's suspension system on packs such as the Atmos AG and Aura AG. A continuous tensioned mesh panel runs from the top of the back panel to the hip belt, so the pack hugs your body and transfers weight smoothly to your hips while air moves freely across your back. Many trampers find it one of the most comfortable ways to carry a heavy load.

Are Osprey Transporter duffels worth it?

The Transporter range is built for hard travel: tough, water-resistant fabric, padded sides that protect contents, and harness straps that let you carry a full duffel on your back from the car park to the hut or across an airport. Wheeled versions help on longer transfers. For road trips, boats and gear-heavy adventures, a Transporter is a durable, versatile choice that should last for many years.

How do I find the right size Osprey backpack?

Osprey sizes its harnesses by torso length, not your height, so measure from the bone at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones. Compare that with the size chart for the pack you want, and choose the men's or women's version that fits your shape. Many packs also have adjustable harnesses. Trying a pack on with some weight in it is the best final check.
