About Malosi
Malosi is a lure brand born from a love of fishing, art and adventure. Founded by the Malosi brothers, it designs topwater lures, stickbaits, poppers and metal lures with meticulous care, and every lure goes through years of refining and testing before it reaches the tackle box. The result is a range made for anglers who see every cast as part of a bigger story.
Malosi lures have become a favourite with New Zealand topwater anglers chasing kingfish and other pelagics, thanks to their distinctive finishes and the way they swim.
The Malosi range
Malosi groups its lures into four families. Staples are high-performance lures, including long-casting sinking stickbaits such as the Rogue and floating stickbaits such as the Staple Chieftain. Masters are premium timber lures. Micros are designed for ultimate light tackle, and Marksman are ultra-strong metal lures for casting and jigging.
The model names tell you how each lure works: F means floating, S means sinking and P means popper. Floating stickbaits like the Chieftain and Vader are worked across the surface with a sweeping action, sinking stickbaits like the Bravo and Rogue can be fished deeper or cast further, and poppers like the Tyrant and Talo create a splash that pulls fish up from below.
Each lure comes in a range of colours, from natural baitfish patterns to bright, high-contrast finishes, so you can match the bait the fish are feeding on or stand out in murky water and low light. Sizes are listed in millimetres and weights in grams, so you can match a lure to your rod's casting range.

Frequently asked questions about Malosi
What do F, S and P mean on Malosi lures?
The letter after a Malosi lure's size tells you how it behaves in the water. F means floating, so the lure sits on or near the surface and is worked with a sweeping action. S means sinking, so it can be fished below the surface and often casts further. P means popper, a lure with a cupped face that splashes and makes noise. For example, the Chieftain 180F is a floating stickbait and the Tyrant 180P is a surface popper.
What are Malosi Staples?
Staples are Malosi's range of high-performance lures, designed to be the everyday workhorses of a topwater tackle box. They include long-casting sinking stickbaits such as the Rogue and floating stickbaits such as the Staple Chieftain, in a range of sizes for different fish and conditions. They are a great starting point if you are building a topwater lure collection for kingfish and other pelagic species.
What size Malosi stickbait should I use for kingfish?
Kingfish are commonly targeted with stickbaits in roughly the 150 to 220 millimetre range, depending on the size of the fish, the bait they are feeding on and the rod you are using. Smaller sizes suit lighter outfits and fish feeding on small baitfish, while larger lures cast further on heavy rods and appeal to bigger fish. Match the lure weight to your rod's casting range, and change sizes if the fish are not responding.
What is the difference between a Malosi stickbait and a Malosi popper?
A stickbait is a slim lure with no lip that you work across or just below the surface with sweeps of the rod, creating a darting, injured baitfish action. A popper has a cupped face that catches water when you jerk it, throwing splash and making a popping sound that attracts fish from a distance. Malosi stickbaits include the Chieftain, Vader and Rogue, and its poppers include the Tyrant and Talo.
Does Malosi make lures for light tackle?
Yes. Malosi's Micros range is designed for ultimate light tackle, and alongside it we stock compact Malosi lures such as the Minion floating minnow and the Echo walking pencil, as well as micro jigs. They suit lighter rods and lines and fish feeding on small baitfish, making them a good option for kahawai, trevally and smaller kingfish in harbours and around the coast.
Are Malosi lures worth the price?
Malosi lures sit at the premium end of the market, and the price reflects the years of refining and testing behind each design, along with strong construction and distinctive finishes. For topwater fishing, where a lure needs to cast well, swim right and survive aggressive fish, many anglers find that a well-made lure catches more and lasts longer than a cheaper copy, which makes it better value over time.
