About Arc'teryx

Arc'teryx was founded in 1989 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, by climbers who wanted better gear for the Coast Mountains on their doorstep. The name and logo come from the Archaeopteryx, one of the earliest known birds, a nod to the idea of gear that keeps evolving. The brand is now part of Amer Sports.

Arc'teryx is known for precise patterning, clean construction and close attention to detail, from laminated, taped seams to hoods and cuffs that fit properly over a helmet or gloves.

Much of the range is built around layering: a breathable base, an insulated mid-layer and a weatherproof shell, each designed to work with the others, so you can add or remove warmth as conditions change through the day.

Shells, insulation and footwear

The Alpha SV is the flagship hardshell for severe weather and alpine climbing, while the Beta range is a versatile GORE-TEX shell for tramping, skiing and travel. Atom jackets and hoodies use synthetic insulation that stays warm when damp, ideal as a mid-layer in New Zealand's changeable weather, and the Cerium uses lightweight down for warmth on cold, dry days. The Squamish is a light wind shell for running and walking.

On the trail, the Norvan range is built for mountain running and the Kragg is a versatile everyday shoe, while Mantis waist packs and Bird Word caps and toques round out the range. Footwear runs from trail runners to hiking and casual shoes, in men's and women's fits.

Arc'teryx at Land & Sea

We carry a growing Arc'teryx range for men and women: hardshells, insulated jackets and vests, fleece such as the Covert Cardigan, running and hiking footwear, Mantis packs, and caps and beanies. Our team can help you understand the naming, such as SV for severe weather, AR for all round and SL for super light, and build a layering system for tramping, skiing or a wet commute.

Frequently asked questions about Arc'teryx

Why is Arc'teryx so expensive?

Arc'teryx uses premium materials such as GORE-TEX membranes and high-quality insulation, and its jackets are cut with very precise patterns and built with laminated, taped seams, which takes more time and skill to make. The result is gear that fits well, performs in harsh weather and lasts for many years. For anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors, that durability and performance often justify the higher price.

What does SV, AR and LT mean on Arc'teryx jackets?

These letters describe what a product is built for. SV means Severe Weather, the toughest and most protective versions such as the Alpha SV. AR means All Round, a versatile balance of protection and weight, and LT means Lightweight. SL means Super Light, for when weight and pack size matter most. Comparing these within a range, such as the Beta, helps you choose the right balance of durability, protection and weight.

What is the difference between the Arc'teryx Alpha SV and Beta jackets?

Both are GORE-TEX hardshells, but they suit different uses. The Alpha SV is Arc'teryx's most protective climbing shell, made with tough fabric for severe weather, ice and alpine routes, with a helmet-compatible hood. The Beta range is lighter and more versatile, built for tramping, skiing, travel and everyday wet weather. Most New Zealand trampers will find a Beta does everything they need, while climbers and guides often choose the Alpha SV.

Is the Arc'teryx Atom Hoody warm?

The Atom Hoody is a lightweight synthetic insulated jacket designed for active warmth. It is warm enough to wear on its own on a cool day, but it really shines as a mid-layer under a shell when you are moving, because the synthetic insulation stays warm when damp and the stretchy side panels breathe. For very cold, still conditions or long breaks, a down jacket such as the Cerium will feel warmer for its weight.

Where is Arc'teryx from?

Arc'teryx is a Canadian brand, founded in 1989 in North Vancouver, British Columbia, and it still designs its products in the Vancouver area, close to the Coast Mountains where much of its gear is tested. The brand is part of Amer Sports. Its name and fossil logo come from the Archaeopteryx, one of the earliest known birds, chosen to represent the evolution of outdoor gear.

How do I wash an Arc'teryx GORE-TEX jacket?

Washing actually helps a GORE-TEX shell perform. Close all the zips and fastenings, then machine wash it warm with a small amount of technical wash or mild liquid detergent, rinse twice and skip the fabric softener. Tumble dry on a low to medium heat, as gentle heat helps reactivate the water repellent finish. If water stops beading on the surface, reproof the jacket with a wash-in or spray-on treatment.

Does Arc'teryx have a warranty?

Yes, Arc'teryx stands behind its products with a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, and it also offers a repair service for damage outside that cover. The exact terms are set by Arc'teryx, so keep your receipt and check the current warranty details for your product.
