About Columbia
Columbia Sportswear began in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, when the Lamfrom family bought a small hat company and named it after the Columbia River. Gert Boyle, who took over the business in 1970, became famous as the tough, no-nonsense face of the brand, and under her leadership Columbia grew into one of the biggest outdoor clothing companies in the world.
Columbia's focus has always been practical, well priced outdoor clothing that keeps you comfortable whatever the weather is doing, and that is exactly why it suits the way New Zealanders get outside.
PFG fishing shirts
PFG stands for Performance Fishing Gear, Columbia's line of clothing designed with anglers. PFG shirts are light, quick drying and vented across the back to keep you cool on hot days, with sun protection built into the fabric. The Bahama II and Tamiami II are classic button-up fishing shirts with handy chest pockets, and the PFG Uncharted range includes long sleeve tops for full sun coverage on the boat, the beach or the flats.
Terminal Roamer stretch shorts pair well with them, giving you room to move and quick drying comfort when you are wading or climbing in and out of the boat.
Fleece, jackets and Columbia at Land & Sea
For cooler days, the Helvetia II half snap fleece and Backbowl II full zip fleece are soft, warm layers for everyday wear and around camp. The Pike Lake II and Puffect II are insulated puffer jackets for winter warmth, and the Challenger II windbreaker and Riptide II retro anorak bring a bold, colourful look while keeping the wind out. The Landroamer range adds accessories such as the ear flap cap.
At Land & Sea we stock a big Columbia range for men and women, and our team can help you find the right size and layer for your next outing. Mixing a PFG shirt, a fleece and a windbreaker gives you a simple layering system that covers most days on the water or the trail.
Frequently asked questions about Columbia
What does PFG stand for in Columbia clothing?
PFG stands for Performance Fishing Gear, Columbia's range of clothing designed for anglers. PFG shirts, tops and shorts are made from light, quick drying fabrics with sun protection, and many shirts have vented backs, rod holder loops and chest pockets for small gear. The range is popular for fishing, boating and beach days, but plenty of people wear PFG shirts for travel and summer days in town too.
What is the difference between the Columbia Bahama II and Tamiami II shirts?
Both are Columbia PFG button-up fishing shirts with vented backs, quick drying fabric and sun protection. The Bahama II is made from a soft, cotton feel nylon fabric with a relaxed look, while the Tamiami II uses a lighter, smoother fabric that dries very fast, which many anglers prefer on hot days. Both come in short and long sleeve versions, so choose by the feel you like and how much sun coverage you want.
Is the Columbia Helvetia fleece warm?
Yes. The Columbia Helvetia II half snap fleece is a soft, cosy fleece pullover designed as a warm everyday layer for cool mornings, evenings around camp and casual winter wear. It is a mid-weight fleece, so it works well on its own on cool days or under a rain jacket when the weather turns. It is not windproof, so add a shell or windbreaker over the top in exposed, windy conditions.
Is Columbia a good outdoor clothing brand?
Columbia is a well established American outdoor clothing brand, founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1938. It is known for practical, comfortable and well priced clothing for fishing, hiking, camping and everyday wear, including PFG fishing shirts, fleece, insulated jackets and windbreakers. It sits at an approachable price point compared with some technical alpine brands, which makes it a popular choice for families.
What is the Columbia Riptide II anorak?
The Columbia Riptide II is a retro style pullover windbreaker anorak with a half zip and a front pouch pocket, inspired by Columbia's classic jackets from earlier decades. It is light and packable and keeps the wind off on breezy days, at the beach or on the boat, with bold colour blocking that gives it a distinctive look. It is a wind layer rather than a waterproof rain jacket, so carry a rain shell for heavy weather.
Which Columbia jacket is best for winter?
For winter warmth, look at Columbia's insulated jackets such as the Pike Lake II and Puffect II, which use synthetic insulation that stays warm even when damp. Layer one over a Helvetia II or Backbowl II fleece on cold days for extra warmth. For windy days, a Challenger II windbreaker over a fleece is a lighter option. Our team can help you choose the right layers for the conditions you face most often.
