About MSR

MSR, short for Mountain Safety Research, was founded in 1969 in Seattle by Larry Penberthy, a mountaineer and engineer who wanted climbing gear that had been properly tested for safety. That focus on engineering and testing still drives the brand, which is now part of Cascade Designs, alongside sister brands such as Therm-a-Rest.

MSR made its name with backcountry stoves and has grown into a trusted maker of tents, cookware and water treatment for trampers and climbers around the world.

MSR's early work testing ropes, ice axes and other climbing gear set the tone for a company that still puts its products through tough testing before they reach the trail.

Stoves and cookware

The PocketRocket 2 is one of the most popular lightweight canister stoves around, small enough to fit in a mug, while the PocketRocket Deluxe adds a pressure-regulated burner and push-start igniter for better performance in the cold and wind. The WindBurner systems use an enclosed, windproof burner for efficient cooking in exposed spots, with personal and group sizes and accessories such as a stock pot and ceramic skillet.

MSR's Titan range of titanium kettles, mugs and tumblers is extremely light, and the Alpine stainless steel cookware, kitchen sets and utensils are tough enough for years of use on the trail and at camp.

Tents, water and MSR at Land & Sea

The Hubba Hubba LT is MSR's lightweight, freestanding hiking tent, available in one, two and three person versions, with generous space and easy setup for tramping. For water, the Dromedary bags carry extra water around camp and the TrailShot is a compact microfilter for drinking from streams.

We stock a wide MSR range, and our team can help you choose a stove and cook set to suit your trips. MSR also makes practical tools such as the stake hammer, along with Alpine utensils and dish brushes that make cleaning up at camp easy.

Frequently asked questions about MSR

What does MSR stand for?

MSR stands for Mountain Safety Research. The company was founded in 1969 in Seattle by Larry Penberthy, a mountaineer and engineer who was concerned about the safety of climbing equipment and set out to test and build better gear. That engineering focus still runs through MSR's stoves, tents, cookware and water treatment, and the brand is now part of Cascade Designs.

What is the difference between the MSR PocketRocket 2 and PocketRocket Deluxe?

Both are lightweight canister stoves that screw onto a gas canister. The PocketRocket 2 is the simpler, lighter option, ideal for fast and light trips in fair conditions. The PocketRocket Deluxe adds a pressure regulator, which keeps the flame steady as the canister empties and in the cold, a broader burner that copes better with wind, and a push-start igniter. Choose the Deluxe for colder, windier trips.

Is the MSR Hubba Hubba LT freestanding?

Yes, the Hubba Hubba LT is a freestanding hiking tent, which means its pole structure holds the tent up without needing to be pegged out, so you can pitch it on hard ground and move it around before staking it down. You should still peg and guy it out in wind and rain for stability. It comes in one, two and three person versions, all designed for lightweight tramping with good interior space.

What is the MSR WindBurner?

The WindBurner is MSR's stove system designed to keep working in the wind. Its enclosed burner and heat exchanger pot are built so wind does not blow the flame around, which makes it very efficient with fuel in exposed places such as tops, beaches and climbing camps. It comes in personal and group sizes, and accessories such as a stock pot and ceramic skillet let you cook more than just boiling water.

What is the MSR TrailShot?

The TrailShot is MSR's compact, pocket-sized water microfilter. You drop the hose into a stream or lake and squeeze the pump in your hand, and filtered water flows out to drink directly or fill a bottle. It removes bacteria and protozoa, such as giardia, so it suits tramping and travel where water sources are plentiful. A replacement filter cartridge is available when the original wears out.

Is MSR Titan titanium cookware worth it?

If weight matters, yes. MSR's Titan kettles, mugs and tumblers are made from titanium, which is very strong for its weight, does not rust and does not affect the taste of food or drinks. They are ideal for ultralight tramping and climbing. Titanium does not spread heat as evenly as aluminium or steel, so it is best for boiling water and simple meals rather than frying, where MSR's Alpine stainless cookware is a better fit.

Who owns MSR?

MSR is part of Cascade Designs, a Seattle-based company that also owns Therm-a-Rest, known for its sleeping pads, and other outdoor brands. MSR was founded in 1969 as Mountain Safety Research by Larry Penberthy and has been part of Cascade Designs for many years. The brands share a focus on engineering, testing and durable equipment for the backcountry.
