About Traeger
Traeger invented the wood pellet grill. In the 1980s, Joe Traeger, who ran a heating business in Oregon, came up with a grill that fed small hardwood pellets into a fire pot with an auger, controlled by a thermostat, so you could cook low and slow with real wood smoke without constantly tending a fire. Traeger patented the design in 1986, and the pellet grill has since become one of the most popular ways to barbecue.
The appeal is simple: set the temperature, and the grill keeps it steady, so you can smoke a brisket all day, roast a chicken or bake a pizza with the same ease as an oven.
The grills
The Traeger Ironwood 650 is a premium grill with WiFIRE connectivity, so you can control and monitor your cook from your phone, and a large cooking area for family meals and entertaining. The Pro 575 also has WiFIRE, making it a great choice for people who want app control at a more accessible price. The Pro 22 is a classic, reliable pellet grill with a generous cooking area and simple digital control.
All Traeger grills smoke, grill, bake, roast, braise and barbecue, which means one grill can do the work of several.
Pellets, flavour and Traeger at Land & Sea
The fuel is part of the flavour. Traeger Signature Blend pellets mix hardwoods for an all-round smoke, and BBQ Select gives a bold barbecue flavour in a 14kg bag. Traeger rubs, such as the Original, Pork and Poultry, Prime Rib and Veggie rubs, and Traeger hot sauces finish the job. Accessories such as the P.A.L front shelf, the StayDry pellet bin, full length covers and drip tray and bucket liners keep your grill tidy and protected.
At Land & Sea we stock a strong Traeger range, and our team can help you choose the right grill and accessories for your outdoor kitchen.
Frequently asked questions about Traeger
How does a Traeger pellet grill work?
A Traeger pellet grill burns small hardwood pellets in a fire pot. An auger feeds pellets from the hopper into the fire pot at a rate set by the digital controller, and a fan keeps the fire burning evenly and circulates heat and smoke around the food. You set the temperature, and the grill adds pellets as needed to hold it steady. That gives you real wood smoke flavour with the convenience of an oven.
What is Traeger WiFIRE?
WiFIRE is Traeger's connectivity technology, available on grills such as the Ironwood 650 and Pro 575. It connects the grill to your home Wi-Fi so you can use the Traeger app on your phone to change the temperature, set timers, monitor the cook and follow recipes, without standing next to the grill. It is ideal for long, slow cooks like brisket or pork shoulder, where you want to keep an eye on progress.
Which Traeger grill should I buy?
Choose by your budget, how many people you cook for and whether you want app control. The Traeger Pro 22 is a reliable, generous grill with simple digital control and no Wi-Fi. The Pro 575 adds WiFIRE app control, which is handy for long cooks. The Ironwood 650 is the premium choice, with WiFIRE and a larger cooking area for entertaining. Our team can talk you through the differences in store.
Can I use other wood pellets in a Traeger?
Traeger recommends using Traeger wood pellets, which are made from hardwoods and sized to feed consistently through the auger and burn cleanly in its grills. Pellets with poor quality, high moisture or added fillers can burn unevenly and affect flavour. Whatever pellets you use, store them in a dry place, such as the Traeger StayDry pellet bin, because pellets that absorb moisture can swell and jam the auger.
What can you cook on a pellet grill?
Almost anything. A pellet grill can smoke low and slow for brisket, ribs and pork shoulder, roast whole chickens and lamb, grill steaks and sausages, and bake pizza, bread and even desserts, all with a subtle wood smoke flavour. Because the temperature stays steady, it is easy to cook like an oven. Many people use a Traeger for everyday family meals as well as weekend barbecue projects.
How do I clean a Traeger grill?
Clean your Traeger regularly to keep it running well. Empty the grease bucket and change the drip tray and bucket liners when they fill up, scrape the grill grates while they are warm, and vacuum ash out of the fire pot after every few cooks, with the grill fully cool and unplugged. A full clean every so often keeps the grill efficient, and a fitted cover protects it from the weather between cooks.
