Ocean Angler is an Auckland tackle brand built on local knowledge. Paul Senior has more than 30 years of experience fishing around the Auckland area, and over that time he has developed products designed for New Zealand conditions and the keen Kiwi angler. The goal is simple: make fishing easier and more successful for everyone, from first timers off the wharf to experienced boaties.

Kabura sliders and jigheads
The Kabura Slider is the heart of the range. A kabura, or slider, is a weighted head with a skirt and hooks that slides freely on the line, so a fish can take it without feeling the weight. You drop it to the bottom, wind it up slowly and steadily, and let snapper chase it. How do you fish an Ocean Angler Kabura Slider?
Drop the Kabura Slider to the bottom, then wind it up slowly and steadily for 10 to 20 turns before dropping it back down again. The slow, steady retrieve is the key, so resist the urge to strike when you feel bites. Keep winding at the same pace until the rod loads up, then lift into the fish. Snapper often follow the slider up and take it, so keep fishing it all the way back to the boat.
How heavy should an Ocean Angler Kabura Slider be?
Choose a Kabura weight that lets you reach and feel the bottom in the depth and drift you are fishing. In shallow water and calm conditions, lighter weights such as 40g to 60g work well, while deeper water, current or wind need heavier weights such as 80g to 100g or more. If you lose contact with the bottom, go heavier. Carrying a few weights lets you adjust as the tide and wind change.
What is a drogue sea anchor used for?
A drogue, or sea anchor, is a parachute shaped bag that you deploy off the side or bow of a boat or kayak. It fills with water and slows your drift in the wind, which keeps your lures or baits in the strike zone for longer and your line closer to vertical.
