About Radix Nutrition
Radix Nutrition is a New Zealand company established in 2013, with its own manufacturing facility in the Waikato. Radix was built around performance nutrition, and its meals are designed to be nutritionally balanced as well as tasty, using real food ingredients. They were developed with athletes, adventurers and busy people in mind, and they have been used everywhere from offshore sailing races to multi-day tramps and hunting trips.
Radix meals are freeze dried, so they are light to carry, keep for a long time on the shelf, and only need water to prepare.
Meals and breakfasts
Radix Original freeze dried meals come in two sizes, around 400kcal and 600kcal, so you can match the meal to your appetite and how hard you are working. Flavours include Chipotle Lime Burrito Bowl, Pasta Bolognese, Basil Pesto Pasta, Peri-Peri, Turkish Falafel, Indian Curry, Thai Green Curry and Mexican Chilli, giving plenty of variety over a long trip.
For the morning, Radix Original breakfasts, in flavours such as Banana, Rich Chocolate and Tropical Mango, give you a quick, filling start. The Ultra breakfasts, at around 800kcal in flavours such as Banana and Coconut, are designed for big days when you need maximum energy.
How to use Radix and Radix at Land & Sea
Preparing a Radix meal is simple: add water to the pouch, stir, seal and wait for the time shown on the pack. Hot water gives a warm meal, and many Radix meals can also be made with cold water when you do not want to light a stove, which is handy in a hurry or when fuel is limited. Eat straight from the pouch for no dishes, and pack the empty pouch out with you.
At Land & Sea we stock a range of Radix meals and breakfasts, and our team can help you plan food for your next trip, from a single overnight tramp to a week in the hills.
Frequently asked questions about Radix Nutrition
Are Radix Nutrition meals made in New Zealand?
Yes. Radix Nutrition is a New Zealand company, established in 2013, that manufactures its meals at its own facility in the Waikato. Its freeze dried meals and breakfasts are designed for athletes, trampers, hunters, sailors and busy people who want convenient, nutritionally balanced food. Because they are made locally, they are a popular choice for Kiwis who like to support New Zealand made products on their adventures.
Which Radix meal size should I choose?
Radix Original meals come in roughly 400kcal and 600kcal sizes. The 400kcal size suits lighter appetites, shorter days or a lunch on the go, while the 600kcal size is better for a main dinner after a big day tramping or hunting. For very demanding days, the 800kcal Ultra breakfasts provide more energy. Many people combine sizes over a trip to match how hard each day will be.
Can you make Radix meals with cold water?
Many Radix meals can be rehydrated with cold water as well as hot, though they take longer and the texture and flavour are best with hot water. Cold water preparation is useful when you want to save fuel, do not have time to boil water or are moving fast and do not want to stop and cook. Check the instructions on the pack for the recommended water volume and soaking time for each meal.
What is the Radix Ultra breakfast?
The Radix Ultra breakfast is a high energy freeze dried breakfast with around 800kcal per serve, designed for big days when you need a lot of fuel to get going, such as long tramps, hunting trips, races and offshore sailing. It comes in flavours such as Banana and Coconut. Prepare it with water like the other Radix meals, and pair it with a hot drink for a warm start on cold mornings.
How many calories do I need on a tramp?
Most adults burn far more energy tramping than they do in daily life, often 3,000 to 4,500 calories or more a day depending on body size, pack weight, terrain and weather. Plan meals and snacks to match, with a solid breakfast, plenty of snacks through the day and a substantial dinner. Calorie dense freeze dried meals, such as Radix 600kcal dinners and 800kcal Ultra breakfasts, help you carry more energy for less weight.
Are freeze dried meals good for sailing?
Yes. Freeze dried meals are light, compact and have a long shelf life, and they only need water and a few minutes to prepare, which makes them practical on a moving boat where cooking can be difficult. Radix meals have been used on offshore sailing races and cruising trips for that reason. Pack a mix of meals and breakfasts, store them somewhere dry, and carry enough fresh water for preparation.
