About Ocean's Legacy
Ocean's Legacy was born from years of on the water experience, testing and developing fishing gear around the world. The brand's focus is jigging, especially slow pitch jigging, a technique that has transformed deep water fishing in New Zealand for kingfish, hapuka, bluenose and snapper. Its motto, Tuned to Perfection, reflects how carefully its jigs and rods are matched to work together.
Ocean's Legacy designs a complete system, from the jig and hooks to the rod and the knot tying tools, so every part of your setup is built for the same job.
Slow pitch jigs
Slow pitch jigs are designed to flutter and glide as they fall, rather than just sinking straight down, and fish often strike during that fall. Ocean's Legacy jigs come in different shapes for different conditions. The Hybrid Contact is a versatile all-rounder, the Long Contact has a longer profile with a slower, gliding fall, and the Deep Contact is built for heavy weights and deep water where the current is strong.
The Roven covers both rigged slow pitch jigs and light micro jigs, which are deadly for snapper and smaller species in shallower water, and the Sling Shot is a small casting lure for chasing fish on the surface. Many jigs come rigged with assist hooks and in glow colours for deep water.
Rods, tackle and Ocean's Legacy at Land & Sea
Slow pitch jigging relies on a rod with the right action, and Ocean's Legacy Elementus and Slow Element rods are built for it, in overhead and spin versions rated by PE line class and jig weight, including heavy Elementus deep water models for big jigs. Lancet inline hooks, swivels and solid rings complete the rig, and the PR Bobbin makes tying a strong PR knot easy.
At Land & Sea we stock a deep Ocean's Legacy range, and our team can help you put together a matched jig, rod and line setup.
Frequently asked questions about Ocean's Legacy
What is slow pitch jigging?
Slow pitch jigging is a jigging technique that uses short, rhythmic lifts of the rod and turns of the reel to make the jig flutter and glide as it falls, rather than ripping it quickly through the water. Fish often strike while the jig is falling. It is less tiring than speed jigging and very effective for kingfish, hapuka, bluenose and snapper in deep water, which is why it has become so popular in New Zealand.
Which Ocean's Legacy jig should I use?
Choose by depth, current and how you want the jig to fall. The Hybrid Contact is a versatile all-rounder for most conditions, the Long Contact gives a longer, slower gliding fall in moderate current, and the Deep Contact is built for heavy weights in deep water and strong current. For shallower water and snapper, try the Roven micro jigs. Carry a few weights so you can stay in touch with the bottom.
What jig weight should I use for slow pitch jigging?
A good starting point is roughly one gram of jig weight per metre of water depth, then adjust for current and drift. In strong current or a fast drift you need a heavier jig to reach the bottom and stay near it, while in calm conditions a lighter jig gives a better fall and more action. Match the jig weight to your rod's rated range, which is printed on Ocean's Legacy rods, so the rod can work the jig.
What does PE rating mean on a jigging rod?
The PE rating on a jigging rod, such as PE2.0 or PE3.0, refers to the size of braided line the rod is designed to use. PE is the Japanese system for rating braid diameter, and higher numbers mean thicker, stronger line. Ocean's Legacy rods also list a jig weight range. Matching your braid and jig weight to the rod's ratings gives you the best action and helps protect the rod from overloading.
What is the PR Bobbin used for?
The Ocean's Legacy PR Bobbin is a tool for tying the PR knot, a very strong and slim knot used to join braided main line to a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader. The bobbin wraps the leader tightly around the braid under tension, creating a smooth connection that passes easily through rod guides. It takes a little practice, but many jigging anglers rely on it for knots they can trust on big fish.
Why are many slow pitch jigs glow coloured?
Light fades quickly as you go deeper in the ocean, so at the depths where slow pitch jigging is often done, many colours become hard for fish to see. Glow, or luminous, finishes absorb light and then give it off in the dark, helping the jig stand out to fish in deep water. Charge the glow with a torch or sunlight before dropping it down, and try different colours until you find what the fish want.
