About Loon Outdoors
Loon Outdoors is an American fly fishing accessories company with a simple philosophy: small, steady steps add up over the long run. The company believes that making great products, helping the people around it and reducing its environmental impact all come down to doing the little things well, consistently. That thinking shows in its gear, which is practical, well made and designed by anglers who spend a lot of time on the water.
Loon is especially known for its fly floatants, knot and repair products and its range of tools, the small essentials that clip to your vest and make a day on the river run smoothly.
Tools for the river
Loon's Rogue Quickdraw forceps are designed for quick, easy unhooking, with a shape that clips securely and comes free fast when you need it, and the Micro Scissor forceps combine a forceps with small scissors. Rogue Nippers trim tippet cleanly, and the nippers with a nail knot tool help you tie leader connections.
The Rogue Zinger keeps tools close at hand on a retractable cord, the neckvest lanyard lets you carry your essentials without a vest, and the magnetic net release holds your landing net on your back and releases it with one hand when a fish is close.
Floatants, repairs and Loon at Land & Sea
To keep dry flies riding high, Lochsa is a gel floatant for treating flies before you fish, and Fly Dip is a liquid floatant you dip flies into. Snake River Mud does the opposite, helping tippet and flies sink. UV Knot Sense is a coating you apply to knots and cure with UV light to make them smooth and strong, and UV Wader Repair seals small leaks in waders quickly with sunlight. Silicone caddies in small, medium and double barrel sizes store flies on the move.
At Land & Sea we stock a good range of Loon accessories, and our team can help you kit out a vest or sling for your next trip.
Frequently asked questions about Loon
What is the difference between Loon Lochsa and Fly Dip?
Both are Loon fly floatants that help dry flies float higher and longer. Lochsa is a gel floatant that you rub into a dry fly before you start fishing or between casts, and it suits flies made with natural materials such as hackle and CDC alternatives. Fly Dip is a liquid floatant that you dip a fly into and let dry, which treats the whole fly evenly. Many anglers use Fly Dip at home and Lochsa on the river.
What is Loon UV Knot Sense?
Loon UV Knot Sense is a thin coating that you apply to knots, such as leader to fly line connections, then cure in seconds with UV light or sunlight. It creates a smooth, flexible finish that helps knots slide through the rod guides more easily and protects them from wear. It can also be used for small fly tying jobs. Apply a thin layer and let it cure fully before casting or putting weight on the knot.
How do I repair a small leak in my waders?
First find the leak by turning the waders inside out and spraying the suspect area with rubbing alcohol, which darkens where water gets through, or by filling them with water in the bath. Clean and dry the area, then apply a wader repair product such as Loon UV Wader Repair, which cures in sunlight or UV light in a few minutes. For large tears or seam failures, seek a professional repair.
Why use a magnetic net release?
A magnetic net release holds your landing net on the back of your vest, sling or pack using a strong magnet and a cord, so your hands are free for casting and wading. When a fish is close, you reach back, pull the net free with one hand and land the fish, and the cord keeps the net attached so you cannot lose it in the current. The Loon magnetic net release is a simple, practical upgrade for river anglers.
What is Snake River Mud used for?
Loon Snake River Mud is a sinkant, the opposite of a floatant. You rub it onto your tippet and leader to break the surface tension so they sink quickly instead of floating, which helps nymphs and wet flies get down to the fish faster and reduces the shine and wake of floating tippet near a dry fly. Use a small amount and apply it along the section of tippet you want to sink.
What tools should every fly angler carry?
Most fly anglers carry nippers for trimming tippet, forceps for removing hooks and pinching barbs, floatant for dry flies, spare tippet and a small fly box or caddy. A zinger or lanyard keeps tools within reach, and a landing net with a magnetic release makes landing fish easier. Loon makes Rogue Nippers, Rogue Quickdraw forceps, floatants, zingers, lanyards and net releases, so you can build a kit.
