About Airflo

Airflo set out to rethink the fly line. For decades, most fly lines were made from PVC, a rigid plastic that needs plasticisers to make it supple, and those plasticisers slowly leach out, leaving lines stiff, cracked and short lived. Airflo developed fly lines using a polyurethane coating that needs no plasticisers, so the lines stay supple for longer, are tougher and are kinder to the environment.

Airflo is known for innovation, from its Ridge texture to its specialist sinking lines, and its lines are popular with New Zealand trout anglers and saltwater fly fishers.

Ridge 2.0 fly lines

Ridge 2.0 lines have fine raised ridges along their length that reduce the contact area with the rod guides, cutting friction so the line shoots further and with less effort. The ridges also help the line float higher and resist tangles. The Superflo Universal is a versatile floating line for most trout fishing, the Power Taper has a more aggressive front taper for turning over heavier nymph rigs and bigger flies, the Streamer Max is designed for casting streamers, and the Flats Master is an intermediate line for saltwater flats.

The Superflo MAX Tactical is designed for presentation in clear water with spooky fish.

Sinking lines, leaders and tippet

Airflo's 40+ sinking lines, in density ratings such as Di-5 and Di-7, are designed for fishing streamers and lures deep in lakes, and the Sniper 4 Season intermediate line suits slow sinking work year round. Polyleaders add a short sinking or floating section to the end of a floating line, so you can control depth without changing spools.

For the business end, Airflo fluorocarbon tapered leaders, Sightfree G3 and Premium Fluorocarbon tippet, and Tactical Copolymer tippet give you strong, low visibility connections. At Land & Sea our team can help you choose the right line weight, taper and density for your rod and water.

Frequently asked questions about Airflo

Why are Airflo fly lines PVC free?

Traditional PVC fly lines need plasticisers to stay flexible, and those plasticisers gradually leach out, leaving the line stiff and cracked and releasing chemicals into the environment. Airflo makes its lines with a polyurethane coating that does not need plasticisers, so the line stays supple for longer, is more durable and has less environmental impact. That means a longer life on the reel and less waste.

What does Ridge technology do on an Airflo fly line?

Airflo Ridge lines have fine raised ridges running along the line's surface. These ridges reduce the amount of line in contact with the rod guides, cutting friction so the line shoots further with less effort, and they help the line float higher on the water. They also make the line more resistant to tangles. Ridge 2.0 is the latest version, used across the Superflo, Power Taper, Streamer Max and Flats Master lines.

Which Airflo fly line is best for New Zealand trout?

For most river and lake trout fishing in New Zealand, a floating line such as the Airflo Ridge 2.0 Superflo Universal is a versatile choice. If you fish heavier nymph rigs or bigger flies, the Power Taper turns them over more easily. For lake fishing with streamers and lures, a sinking line such as an Airflo 40+ Di-5 or Di-7, or an intermediate line, gets your fly down to where the fish are feeding.

What is a Polyleader?

A Polyleader is a short tapered leader made with a sinking or floating core, which you attach to the end of your fly line before the tippet. It lets you change how deep your fly fishes, from the surface to a few feet down, without changing to a different fly line or spool. Airflo Polyleaders come in a range of sink rates and lengths, making them a simple way to add versatility to a floating line.

Should I use fluorocarbon or copolymer tippet?

Fluorocarbon tippet is less visible underwater, more abrasion resistant and sinks, which makes it ideal for nymphs and subsurface flies in clear water. Copolymer tippet is more supple, has a little more stretch and floats better, which suits dry flies and delicate presentations. Many anglers carry both. Airflo makes Sightfree G3 and Premium Fluorocarbon tippet, and Tactical Copolymer tippet.

What do Di-5 and Di-7 mean on sinking fly lines?

Di ratings describe the density of a sinking fly line and roughly how fast it sinks, in inches per second. A Di-5 line sinks at around five inches per second, and a Di-7 at around seven inches per second, so the Di-7 gets your fly deeper faster. Choose a faster sinking line for deep water, wind and drift, and a slower one for shallower water. Airflo 40+ sinking lines come in several density ratings.
