Daiwa Game Combos
About Daiwa
Daiwa is one of the largest fishing tackle companies in the world. Founded in Japan in 1958, it has built a reputation for engineering and innovation, with technologies that have shaped modern reels, rods and lines. Daiwa invests heavily in research and development, and its gear is used by anglers in almost every type of fishing, from light soft baiting to deep drop and game fishing.
In New Zealand, Daiwa covers the whole spectrum of saltwater and freshwater fishing, and its range is one of the deepest we carry, from reels and rods to lures, line and combos.
Reels
The Saltiga range is Daiwa's flagship saltwater series, built for kingfish, tuna and game fishing, and it includes spin reels and the Saltiga Lever Drag overhead reels for heavy tackle. The Certate is a premium, light and smooth reel that suits soft baiting, while the Exceler, Procyon and BG reels offer tough, reliable performance at more accessible prices, with the BG a long time favourite for jigging and saltwater spin fishing. The Revros and Free Swimmer bait feeder reels let a fish run with a bait before you engage the drag, and the Lexa baitcasters suit lure casting and jigging.
For deep drop fishing, Daiwa's Tanacom and Seapower electric reels do the hard work of winding up from great depths, and they come in complete electric combos with Eliminator rods.
Rods, lures and line
Daiwa rods include the Saltiga LC softbait and topwater rods, Kohga MX slow jig rods, TD Black rods and Exceler Oceano rock rods, and Daiwa combos, such as the Legalis softbait combos, pair a matched rod and reel. For lures, Baitjunkie soft baits, including the 5 inch and 7 inch Jerkshad, grubs and minnows, come in colours designed for New Zealand waters, and the Kohga Bayrubbers kabura and Kohga Blade Breaker slow jigs are built for snapper and deep water. Infeet topwater lures round out the range.
Daiwa line includes J-Braid X8 and J-Braid Expedition braid, Saltiga Durasensor braid and J-Thread mono and fluorocarbon. At Land & Sea our team can help you build a balanced Daiwa setup for the way you fish.
Frequently asked questions about Daiwa
Is Daiwa a good fishing brand?
Yes. Daiwa is one of the largest and most respected fishing tackle brands in the world, founded in Japan in 1958. It is known for engineering, innovation and quality across reels, rods, lures and line, from affordable options for beginners to flagship gear such as the Saltiga and Certate ranges. Many professional and recreational anglers choose Daiwa for its smooth reels, sensitive rods and reliable lines.
Which Daiwa reel is best for soft baiting snapper?
For soft baiting snapper in New Zealand, a 2500 to 4000 size spin reel is ideal. The Daiwa Certate is a premium choice, light and very smooth, while the Exceler and Procyon offer excellent performance for less. Pair the reel with a 7ft to 7ft 10in soft bait rod rated around 3 to 8kg, such as a Saltiga LC or Legalis, and load it with light braid such as J-Braid and a fluorocarbon leader.
What is a Daiwa Tanacom electric reel used for?
The Daiwa Tanacom is an electric reel designed for deep drop fishing, where you fish baits or jigs in very deep water for species such as hapuka, bluenose and bass. A motor powered by a battery does the hard work of winding heavy sinkers and fish up from hundreds of metres, and features such as a line counter help you fish the right depth. Daiwa sells Tanacom reels on their own and in Eliminator electric combos.
What is a bait feeder reel?
A bait feeder reel, such as the Daiwa Revros BRLT or Free Swimmer, has a second, lighter drag system that lets a fish take line freely after it picks up your bait, without feeling much resistance. When you are ready, you turn the handle to engage the main drag and set the hook. It is popular for strayline and live bait fishing for snapper and kingfish, where fish may drop a bait if they feel the weight.
What are Daiwa Kohga Bayrubbers?
Daiwa Kohga Bayrubbers are slow jig kabura lures, with a weighted head and a skirt of rubber strands and hooks that slide freely on the line. You drop them to the bottom and wind up slowly and steadily, and snapper and other reef fish chase and grab the skirt. Kohga Bayrubbers come in a range of weights and colours, such as Smashed Kina, so you can match the depth, drift and conditions on the day.
Should I use J-Braid or Saltiga Durasensor braid?
Both are Daiwa braided lines. J-Braid X8 and J-Braid Expedition are popular, versatile braids that offer great strength, casting and value for soft baiting, jigging and general fishing. Saltiga Durasensor is a premium braid designed for demanding saltwater fishing, with a coating for durability and smooth casting. Choose J-Braid for most fishing, and Saltiga Durasensor for heavy use and big fish.
