About Dolomite
Dolomite was founded in 1897 in Montebelluna, in the foothills of the Italian Dolomites, a region famous for centuries of boot making. The brand made its name in the mountains, and in 1954 Dolomite boots were worn on the Italian expedition that made the first ascent of K2, the second highest mountain in the world. That climb remains one of the proudest moments in the brand's history.
Today Dolomite blends that mountain heritage with modern comfort and materials, making boots and shoes that look as good in town as they perform on the trail.
The 54 collection
The Dolomite 54 collection is named after that 1954 K2 expedition, and its design takes inspiration from the classic mountain boots of the era. The 54 High FG GTX is a retro styled, full grain leather hiking boot with a GORE-TEX waterproof lining, a cushioned midsole and a grippy rubber sole, comfortable enough for everyday wear and capable on day walks. The 54 Low FG GTX brings the same look and waterproofing to a lower cut shoe.
FG stands for full grain leather, a tough, natural material that moulds to your feet over time and develops character with age. The 54 range comes in men's, women's and unisex fits and a choice of colours.
Hiking boots and Dolomite at Land & Sea
For more serious hiking, the Crodarossa Hi GTX and Croda Nera Hi GTX are named after peaks in the Dolomites. They are modern, supportive hiking boots with GORE-TEX waterproof linings and grippy soles, designed for day hikes and tramping on rough, wet tracks.
At Land & Sea we stock Dolomite in a range of sizes, and our team can help you check the fit. Leather boots benefit from a short break-in period, so wear them around home and on short walks before a big trip. Look after the leather with a cleaner and conditioner to keep it waterproof and supple for years.
Frequently asked questions about Dolomite
What is the Dolomite 54 boot named after?
The Dolomite 54 collection is named after 1954, the year Dolomite boots were worn on the Italian expedition that made the first ascent of K2, the world's second highest mountain. The 54 boots take inspiration from the classic mountain boots of that era, combining a retro look with modern comfort, a GORE-TEX waterproof lining and a grippy sole. The 54 High and 54 Low are now among Dolomite's best known designs.
What does FG mean on Dolomite boots?
FG stands for full grain leather, the outer layer of the hide and the strongest, most durable type of leather. Full grain leather resists abrasion and water well, moulds to the shape of your foot over time and develops a rich patina with age. Boots such as the Dolomite 54 High FG GTX and 54 Low FG GTX use it for their uppers. Clean and condition the leather regularly to keep it supple and water resistant.
Are Dolomite 54 boots good for hiking?
The Dolomite 54 High FG GTX is comfortable and capable on day walks and easy to moderate tracks, with a waterproof GORE-TEX lining, cushioning and a grippy rubber sole, and it also works well as an everyday boot. For longer, rougher tramps with a heavy pack, a dedicated hiking boot with more support, such as the Dolomite Crodarossa Hi GTX or Croda Nera Hi GTX, is a better choice.
How do I break in leather hiking boots?
Wear new leather boots around the house and on short walks before a big trip, gradually increasing the distance so the leather softens and moulds to your feet. Wear the socks you will hike in, and lace the boots snugly but not too tight. If you notice rubbing, deal with it early with tape or a different lacing pattern. Most leather boots feel noticeably more comfortable after a few outings.
How do I care for leather boots?
After each trip, remove mud with a soft brush and water, then let the boots dry naturally at room temperature, away from heaters and fires, which can crack the leather. Every so often, clean the leather and apply a conditioner or waterproofing treatment made for leather boots with a GORE-TEX lining. This keeps the leather supple and water resistant, and helps your boots last for many years.
