About Black Diamond
Black Diamond Equipment was founded in 1989 by Peter Metcalf and a group of former employees of Chouinard Equipment, the climbing hardware company started by Yvon Chouinard. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, close to the Wasatch mountains, the company built its reputation on climbing gear and has since grown into trekking poles, headlamps and lanterns, all designed and tested by people who spend serious time in the mountains.
That climbing heritage shows in the way Black Diamond gear is built: light, strong and designed to work when it matters most.
Trekking poles
Black Diamond's Distance Carbon Z poles fold down into three short sections, connected by an internal cord, so they pack small enough to strap to a running vest or tuck into a pack. They are a favourite with trail runners and fast trampers. The Distance Carbon FLZ adds an adjustable section with a FlickLock lever, so you can fine tune the length for climbs and descents.
For general tramping, the Trail and Trail Back trekking poles are durable adjustable poles with comfortable grips. Poles take load off your knees on steep descents, help with balance on river crossings and rough ground, and let your arms share the work on long climbs.
Headlamps, lanterns and Black Diamond at Land & Sea
The headlamp range covers every need. The Spot 400-R and Storm 500-R are rechargeable all-rounders, the Storm adding waterproofing for wild weather. The Cosmo 350 is a simple, light option for camp and emergencies, the Deploy 325 folds flat for the pocket, and the Icon 700 is a powerful lamp for long nights on the trail. Orbiter lanterns light up a tent or campsite.
At Land & Sea we stock a strong range of Black Diamond poles and lighting, and our team can help you choose the right lumens, battery and pole length. A headlamp belongs in every day pack, even on short walks, because a slip or a late finish can quickly turn into a walk out in the dark.
Frequently asked questions about Black Diamond
What is the difference between Distance Carbon Z and FLZ poles?
Both are Black Diamond folding carbon trekking poles that collapse into short sections for packing. The Distance Carbon Z is a fixed length pole, so you choose the size that suits your height. The Distance Carbon FLZ adds an adjustable upper section with a FlickLock lever, letting you change the length for climbs, descents and sharing between people. The Z is slightly lighter, while the FLZ is more versatile.
Which Black Diamond headlamp should I buy?
Choose by how you will use it. The Cosmo 350 is a light, simple headlamp for camping and keeping in the car. The Spot 400-R is a rechargeable all-rounder for tramping and running, and the Storm 500-R adds more power and waterproofing for wild weather. The Deploy 325 folds flat for the pocket or a race vest, and the Icon 700 is a powerful headlamp for long nights on technical ground.
Are trekking poles worth using for tramping?
Yes, for most trampers. Trekking poles take some of the load off your knees and legs on steep descents, help with balance on rough tracks and river crossings, and let your arms share the work on long climbs. They can also support a shelter or help you probe snow and mud. Adjustable poles let you lengthen them for descents and shorten them for climbs, so you can tune them to the terrain.
What does the R mean on Black Diamond headlamps?
The R in names such as the Spot 400-R and Storm 500-R means the headlamp runs on a rechargeable battery that you charge by USB, so you do not need to keep buying disposable batteries. Rechargeable headlamps are convenient for regular use and cheaper to run over time. On multi-day trips, carry a small power bank so you can top the headlamp up between nights away from mains power.
How many lumens do I need in a headlamp?
For reading in a tent and moving around camp, 100 to 200 lumens is plenty. For tramping on tracks after dark, 300 to 400 lumens gives a good beam, and for trail running or technical ground at night, 500 lumens or more helps you see further ahead. Higher outputs drain the battery faster, so the best headlamps let you switch between low, medium and high modes as you need them.
What is the Black Diamond Orbiter lantern?
The Black Diamond Orbiter is a compact, rechargeable lantern designed to light up a tent, shelter or campsite. It comes in versions such as the Orbiter 450 and Orbiter 650, and it can stand on a table, hang from a tent loop or clip onto gear. It also works as a handheld light, which makes it useful for moving around camp. Charge it by USB before you head away and carry a power bank on long trips.
