About AeroPress

The AeroPress was invented in 2005 by Alan Adler, a Stanford engineering lecturer and inventor best known for the Aerobie flying ring. He wanted a better way to make a single cup of coffee, without the bitterness he found in drip coffee, and the result was a simple press that uses air pressure to push water through finely ground coffee and a paper filter.

The AeroPress quickly built a loyal following among coffee lovers, baristas and travellers. It is light, almost unbreakable and easy to clean, and it makes a smooth, rich cup in around a minute, which is why it has become a favourite for camping, tramping and travel as well as the kitchen bench.

Choosing your AeroPress

The AeroPress Original is the classic press, and the AeroPress Clear does the same job in a clear, tough material so you can watch the coffee brew, with colour options such as pink and green. The AeroPress XL makes a bigger batch, ideal for sharing or filling a large mug or carafe. For travel, the AeroPress Go packs into its own mug, making it easy to throw in a pack or carry-on, and the Go Plus is a complete travel coffee system for coffee on the move.

Every AeroPress can make a filter style cup or a strong, concentrated shot that you can top up with hot water or milk.

Filters and AeroPress at Land & Sea

Paper micro-filters give a clean, sediment free cup and come in packs of 350, with natural unbleached filters as an alternative. The stainless steel reusable filter lets more of the coffee's oils through for a fuller body, and saves on paper, which is handy on long trips. XL filters and an XL stainless filter suit the larger press.

At Land & Sea we stock the AeroPress range alongside our camp kitchen gear, so you can pair a press with a stove, kettle and mug for great coffee anywhere.

Frequently asked questions about AeroPress

How do you make coffee with an AeroPress?

Put a filter in the cap, rinse it with hot water and attach it to the chamber. Add finely ground coffee, pour in hot water just off the boil, stir for about ten seconds and insert the plunger to stop dripping. After a minute or so, press down slowly and steadily for around 30 seconds. Use more coffee and less water for a strong shot you can top up, or a full chamber for a filter style cup.

Is the AeroPress good for camping?

Yes. The AeroPress is light, compact and almost unbreakable, and it only needs hot water, so it works well with a camping stove or a jetboil style cooker. It makes a great cup in about a minute and is quick to clean, as the used coffee pops out as a firm puck. The AeroPress Go is designed for travel, packing neatly inside its own mug, which makes it even easier to take tramping or travelling.

What is the difference between the AeroPress Original and Clear?

The AeroPress Original and AeroPress Clear make coffee the same way and produce the same great cup. The Clear is made from a tough, clear material that lets you watch the coffee as it brews, and it comes in a choice of tinted colours. The Original is the classic design that started it all. Choose the Clear if you like to see your brew, or the Original for the familiar look and feel.

Should I use paper or metal AeroPress filters?

Paper micro-filters trap fine particles and some of the coffee's oils, giving a clean, bright, sediment free cup. A stainless steel reusable filter lets more of the oils through, giving a fuller, richer body, and it cuts waste on long trips. Many people keep both and choose by mood. Natural unbleached paper filters are another option if you prefer to avoid bleached paper.

How big is the AeroPress XL?

The AeroPress XL is a larger version of the classic press, designed to make roughly twice as much coffee in one go. That makes it handy for sharing with a friend, filling a large travel mug or brewing into a carafe. It uses its own larger XL paper filters, and an XL stainless steel reusable filter is also available. It is still easy to clean and works the same way as the original press.

How do I clean an AeroPress?

Cleaning an AeroPress is quick. After pressing, unscrew the cap and push the plunger all the way through to pop out the used coffee as a puck, straight into the bin or compost. Rinse the rubber seal and the chamber with water, and wipe it dry. The AeroPress is dishwasher safe on the top rack. Store it with the plunger pushed through, or separated, so the seal does not stay compressed.
