About BLUNT

BLUNT was started in Auckland by industrial designer Greig Brebner, who set out to fix the problems with ordinary umbrellas: flimsy frames that turn inside out in a gust, and sharp tips that are a hazard in a crowd. New Zealand's windy cities proved the perfect testing ground, and the result was a new kind of umbrella that is now sold around the world.

Every BLUNT is designed around strength, safety and a long life, which is why they have become a common sight on the streets of Wellington and Auckland on wild winter days.

What makes a BLUNT different

The heart of every BLUNT is its patented Radial Tensioning System. Instead of a loose canopy flapping between thin ribs, the canopy is pulled taut across the frame, which spreads the load evenly so the umbrella is far less likely to invert or collapse in a strong gust. The canopy edge finishes in rounded BLUNT Tips, which make the umbrella safer around faces in a crowd and strengthen the frame where it takes the most stress.

BLUNT umbrellas are also designed to be repaired rather than thrown away. Parts can be replaced if something does get damaged, which means a BLUNT can last for many years.

Metro or Classic?

The BLUNT Metro is a compact, collapsible umbrella that folds small enough for a bag or backpack, ideal for commuting and travel. The BLUNT Classic is a full-length umbrella with a larger canopy for maximum coverage, the one to choose when you want to stay properly dry walking to work or across a car park. Both come in a range of colours, from classic black and navy to bright shades that are easy to spot in a crowd.

At Land & Sea we stock both, and a BLUNT makes a practical gift that gets used every week of winter.

Frequently asked questions about BLUNT

Why are BLUNT umbrellas so good in the wind?

BLUNT umbrellas use a patented Radial Tensioning System that pulls the canopy taut across the frame and spreads the force of the wind evenly, instead of letting the canopy flap and load individual ribs. That makes them far more resistant to inverting or collapsing in a gust than a typical umbrella. The rounded BLUNT Tips at the canopy edge also strengthen the frame where it takes the most stress.

What is the difference between the BLUNT Metro and BLUNT Classic?

The BLUNT Metro is a compact, folding umbrella that collapses small enough to carry in a bag or backpack, ideal for commuting and travel. The BLUNT Classic is a full-length umbrella with a larger canopy and a longer shaft, giving you more coverage for walking in heavy rain. Both use BLUNT's Radial Tensioning System and rounded tips, so choose by how you will carry it and how much coverage you need.

Is BLUNT a New Zealand brand?

Yes. BLUNT was founded in Auckland by industrial designer Greig Brebner, who set out to design an umbrella that would survive New Zealand's wind and be safer to use in a crowd. The brand has since grown internationally, but its designs are still shaped by the wet, windy conditions of New Zealand cities, which make a tough test for any umbrella and a good reason to own a strong one.

Can a BLUNT umbrella be repaired?

Yes. BLUNT umbrellas are designed to be repaired rather than thrown away, so if a part gets damaged it can often be replaced instead of buying a whole new umbrella. That fits with BLUNT's focus on durability and reducing waste. If you have a problem with a BLUNT bought from Land & Sea, contact our team with the model and a description of the damage and we will help you with the next step.

How do I clean and dry a BLUNT umbrella?

After use, open the umbrella and let it dry fully before folding it away, which prevents mould and keeps the canopy fresh. To clean it, wipe the canopy and frame with a soft cloth or sponge and warm water with a little mild soap, then rinse and let it air dry. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners and putting it away wet, as these can damage the fabric and its water-repellent finish over time.

Are BLUNT umbrellas worth the price?

For anyone who uses an umbrella regularly, yes. Cheap umbrellas often bend, invert or break in their first strong gust and end up in the bin, while a BLUNT is designed to handle real wind, is safer around faces thanks to its rounded tips, and can be repaired if something does go wrong. Over a few winters, one BLUNT usually works out better value than a string of cheap umbrellas.
