About Salomon

Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, in the French Alps, by Francois Salomon, who started out making steel edges for skis. It grew into one of the biggest names in skiing before bringing that mountain expertise to hiking boots and trail running shoes, where it is now one of the leading brands in the world. Salomon is part of Amer Sports.

Salomon still designs in Annecy, close to the mountains where its products are tested, and that focus on a precise fit, sure grip and lightweight protection runs right through the range.

Hiking boots and trail shoes

The Quest is Salomon's supportive backpacking boot, built for carrying a heavier pack over rough ground, while the X Ultra 360 is a lighter, agile hiking shoe and mid boot for day walks and fast tramping. The Elixir range adds comfortable, cushioned hiking footwear for long days on the trail. Many come in GORE-TEX versions, marked GTX, for waterproof protection in wet New Zealand conditions.

For running, the Genesis is a trail running shoe with a grippy outsole for mud, roots and loose ground, and it is also available in wide fits.

Salomon designs its outsoles for grip first, with deep, multi-directional lugs on its trail shoes and boots, and many models add a protective toe cap and a supportive build around the heel to keep your foot stable on uneven, rocky ground. Many New Zealand trampers own both: a GTX boot for wet tracks and a lighter shoe for dry summer walks.

Packs, vests and Salomon at Land & Sea

Salomon's Active Skin running vests carry water and essentials close to the body for long runs and races, with Softflask bottles that shrink as you drink. The Trailblazer packs are simple, lightweight daypacks for walking, running and travel. At Land & Sea we stock Salomon footwear for men and women in a wide range of sizes, and our team can help you choose between a supportive boot and a lighter shoe for the walks you do.

Frequently asked questions about Salomon

Is Salomon a good hiking boot brand?

Yes. Salomon is one of the leading hiking and trail running brands in the world, known for precise fit, excellent grip and lightweight, supportive designs. Its range covers everything from agile hiking shoes such as the X Ultra 360 to supportive backpacking boots such as the Quest, many with GORE-TEX waterproofing, so there is a Salomon option for day walks, multi-day tramps and everything in between.

What is the difference between the Salomon Quest and X Ultra 360?

The Quest is a supportive, high-cut backpacking boot with a stiffer build and more ankle support, designed for carrying heavier packs over rough terrain on multi-day tramps. The X Ultra 360 is lighter and more flexible, available as a low hiking shoe or a mid boot, and suits day walks and faster trips with a lighter load. Choose the Quest for heavy loads and rough tracks, and the X Ultra 360 for agility and comfort.

What does GTX mean on Salomon shoes?

GTX means the shoe or boot has a GORE-TEX waterproof, breathable membrane. It keeps water out while letting sweat vapour escape, which keeps your feet drier in wet grass, mud and rain. GTX versions are a good choice for New Zealand tramping, where you will often cross wet ground. Non-GTX versions breathe better and dry faster, so they can suit hot weather and trips with lots of river crossings.

How should Salomon hiking boots fit?

Salomon footwear generally has a precise, close fit through the midfoot and heel, and some models feel narrower than other brands. Try them on later in the day with the socks you will tramp in, leave about a thumb's width of space in front of your toes for steep downhills, and check that your heel does not lift as you walk. Some models, such as the Genesis, also come in wide versions for broader feet.

What is a Salomon Softflask?

A Softflask is Salomon's soft, collapsible drink bottle. It shrinks as you drink so it does not slosh around, and it packs down flat when empty. Softflasks fit the front pockets of Salomon running vests such as the Active Skin, so you can drink on the move without stopping. Some versions include a filter for drinking from streams, which makes them popular with trail runners and fast hikers alike.

Are Salomon shoes good for trail running in New Zealand?

Yes. Salomon is one of the best known trail running brands, and its shoes are designed for exactly the mud, roots, rock and loose gravel found on New Zealand trails. Look for a grippy outsole with deep lugs for muddy tracks, cushioning to suit the distance you run, and a secure fit that holds your foot on uneven ground. Models such as the Genesis are popular all-round trail running choices.
